Winthrop, Marblehead boys hockey tie in NEC battle

In a battle between two of the top teams in the Northeastern Conference, the Winthrop and Marblehead boys hockey teams fought to a 2-2 draw at Larsen Rink Monday afternoon. The draw gives Winthrop a one-point lead for first place in the NEC standings, with Marblehead and Masconomet tied for second place.

Joey Holgersen scored both goals for the Vikings, while Joe Hayes added one assist.

Winthrop (7-2-3) hosts Gloucester Wednesday afternoon (2).

Will Shull and Aidan Ryan each scored one goal for Marblehead, while Eli Feingold and Connor Jalbert each had one assist. 

Marblehead (7-2-1) travels to Danvers Wednesday morning (11).

BOYS HOCKEY

Weymouth 4, St. Mary’s 2

Brady Bullock and Kyle LoNigro each scored one goal in the loss for the Spartans. 

St. Mary’s finishes the regular season at 4-6-3 and will take on Arlington Catholic in the semifinal round of the CCL Cup Wednesday afternoon (2).

Peabody 2, Saugus 1

The Tanners got the game-winning goal from Luke Buckley with just over a minute and a half to go in Monday afternoon’s game. Matt Devin also scored one goal in the win, while goalie Lucas DeMild made 17 saves.

Peabody (4-6-1) is off until Saturday evening (6:40) when it plays its season finale on the road at Swampscott.

Kevin McMaster scored the lone goal for Saugus, while goalie Nick DiVola made 17 saves in the loss. 

Saugus (3-6-1) hosts Swampscott Wednesday afternoon (12:40).

St. John’s Prep 3, Malden Catholic 0

Ben McGilvray and Aiden Holland both scored their first career varsity goals in the victory for the Prep, while Zach McKennelley added a goal as well. Jake DiNapoli, Pierce Blaeser, Jake Vana and Christian Rosa each had one assist. Goalie Cam Smith made 20 saves to earn the shutout win.

Prior to the game, the Eagles honored their group of 11 seniors — DiNapoli, McKennelley, Smith, Shane Haggerty, Joe Melanson, Anthony Howell, Owen Atkinson, Sean O’Brian, Drew Fietze, Chris Dirks and Matt Bishop — for their contributions to the program over the years.

St. John’s Prep (3-3-3) opens up the Catholic Conference Tournament Wednesday (TBD) against an opponent to be determined later.

GIRLS HOCKEY

Peabody/Lynnfield 6, Beverly/Danvers 3

Paige Thibedeau continued her strong season with her first hat trick of the season in the win. Hannah Gromko, Ella Chase and Chloe Shapleigh each scored one goal in the victory.

Peabody/Lynnfield (9-1-0) is right back in action Tuesday afternoon (3:20) on the road at Masconomet. 

Marblehead 0, Newburyport 0

With the draw, the Magicians have earned five points in their past three games after returning from an extended break. 

Marblehead (3-3-2) travels to Masconomet Wednesday afternoon (2:35).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Saugus 62, Winthrop 52

Myles Manalaysay had a huge game for the Sachems, notching 27 points in the win. Ryan Mabee added 13 points, while Tyrone Manderson scored 10 points and Ben Tapia-Gately scored eight points. 

Saugus (3-7) travels to Swampscott Tuesday (2).

Senior captain Cam Conway had another good game for Winthtop with 14 points and seven rebounds while freshman George Galuris broke out for 14 points, six assists and five rebounds in the loss.

Winthrop (0-12) hosts Salem Academy Wednesday afternoon (12).

Salem 54, Peabody 49

Behind a 29-point outburst from Bobby Jellison, the Witches rolled to their 10th win of the season Monday. 

Tommy Beauregard added 12 points in the win, while Guillermo Pimentel had eight points, five rebounds and eight assists. 

Salem (10-2) hosts Marblehead Tuesday afternoon (12).

Drew Lucas led the way in the loss for Peabody with 13 points, while Shea Lynch was close behind with 10 points. Raphel Laurent added eight points for the Tanners. 

Peabody (6-4) plays on the road at Marblehead Wednesday evening (5:30).

Marblehead 54, Gloucester 47

Marblehead used a 22-7 run in the third quarter to help earn the victory. Junior Kipp Schauder and sophomore Magnus McMarthy each scored 11 points to lead the Magicians. Sophomore Tyrone Countrymon added 10 points in the win.

Marblehead (7-4) travels to Salem Tuesday (12).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Peabody 52, Salem 27

Emma Bloom filled the stat sheet with 10 points, six rebounds and four steals, while Ari Eon was right behind with nine points. Abby Bettencourt had a big game with eight points, four assists and four steals, while Gina Terrazzano scored seven points. 

Peabody (8-3) hosts Marblehead Wednesday evening (5).

Salem hosts Gloucester Wednesday afternoon (2).

Winthrop 37, Saugus 24

Maddie Stiglets and Caroline Earl led the Vikings’ offense with 11 points each. Grace Galuris also did a nice job filling in at point guard for an injured Maura Dorr, dishing seven assists.

Winthrop (10-4) travels to Malden Catholic Wednesday (3).

Ashleen Nescobar led the way for the Sachems with a career high 11 points. Cassie Israelson and Jessica Brenberg also played well in a nice defensive night for the Sachems.

“We had lost to Winthrop by 40 points earlier in the season, so there was some good growth,” Saugus coach Mark Schruender said. “We had a good run in the third quarter and cut things down to five, I just liked the level of competition I saw.”

Saugus hosts Gloucester Tuesday morning (11:45).

Marblehead 40, Gloucester 20

Leila Walton and Emily Clough led the way for the Magicians with 10 points each. Catherine Candelaria wasn’t far behind with seven points while Fehr Gillett scored five. Annika Haley added four points while Molly Cronin scored two.

“It was a good group effort,” Marblehead coach Paul Moran said. “Glucester played hard, we just played a nice game.”

Marblehead (6-3) travels to Peabody Wednesday evening (5).
