LYNN — A billboard on Bennett Street was reported damaged at 8:15 a.m. Wednesday morning, prompting police to block off the street between Orchard and Astor streets until the billboard could be repaired.

A witness who alerted the police said that he arrived at work across the street at around 6 a.m., and there was nothing amiss, but when he came back outside after 7 a.m. the billboard was leaning precariously.

The sign is located right next to a gas main, which the witness, who declined to give his name, said caused him extra concern.

A police spokesperson said that it was unclear if the billboard had been damaged by wind or something else.

A crew with a crane arrived at the site in the early afternoon to attempt to repair the billboard.
