LYNNFIELD — The Lynnfield Art Guild (LAG) will be hosting an abstract art demonstration by renowned painter Ray Gilbert via Zoom on Thursday, February 18 from 7-8:30 p.m.
The event is open to all LAG members by invitation. Prospective members are encouraged to join the guild at the guild’s website, www.lynnfieldarts.org, to take advantage of this and future special artistic events and opportunities. Membership includes complimentary attendance at all live and virtual demonstrations as well as the opportunity to display art, network with other artists and also show art pieces on LAG’s online shows and live shows.
A Lynn native, Gilbert is a graduate of the Boston School of the Museum of Fine Arts. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Tufts University in 1993.
An active member of the Boston Copley Society of Art, Gilbert works in multiple mixed medium paintings and woodcuts. His work draws inspiration from current life events, which he uses to create contemporary historical paintings. Gilbert’s creative process generally starts by throwing sweeping lines and pulling out abstract forms that begin to materialize into a basic composition — that may or may not have a preconceived agenda — then pulling in the image and working out details with active sketchbooks and cell phone images. Gilbert considers his work to be complete when he has accomplished a coherent balance between color, space and form.
“An internal response to an external image is, in my opinion, one of the highest achievements of visual art, it is something that stays with you, it transcends borders or language, it is global … for all people,” Gilbert said. “It is this desire to speak beyond cultures to that common thread that links us all which continues to drive my work to whatever end it finds.”

Gilbert has won many awards in painting and printmaking and his works can be found in private collections in North America, Canada, Europe and South Africa.
The guild will also be hosting demonstrations in March and April. Watercolorist Michael Holter will host a watercolor demonstration on Thursday, March 18 via Zoom from 7-8:30 p.m. On Thursday, April 15, Ken Jordan will host a photography demonstration, also from 7-8:30 p.m.
