Saugus Action Volunteers for the Environment opens applications for 2021 scholarship

February 18, 2021 by Elyse Carmosino

SAUGUS — Saugus Action Volunteers for the Environment (SAVE) is now accepting applications for its 2021 Environmental Scholarship.

The $500 scholarship is open to Saugus students from the class of 2021 who will be attending a two- or four-year college or other educational institution while pursuing a degree in an area that will positively impact the environment.

SAVE’s president, Ann Devlin, said that for years, SAVE’s Environmental Scholarship was solely for Saugus Public Schools students pursuing degrees in fields directly pertaining to sustainability. However, over the last few years, the organization has expanded its requirements to include a bigger pool of applicants.

This new pool includes students who live in Saugus but don’t necessarily attend Saugus Public Schools, as well as those seeking careers outside of sustainability.

Although hoping to encourage a broader spectrum of students to apply, “quality is better than quantity,” Devlin noted of applications the organization has already received.

In the past, she said the organization awarded scholarships to students pursuing a wide range of careers, including marine engineering, art, microbiology, forestry, natural resource management, photography, journalism, and environmental science.

“It runs the gamut from artists to engineers. It’s such a wide-open field if you can prove your case,” Devlin told The Item last year. “Since anything that we do locally impacts the global environment, we want to encourage anyone interested in making the environment better (to apply). We want to reward those people and support them.”

Applicants can download the SAVE 2021 Environmental Scholarship Application Form at www.saugusSAVE.org.

SAVE is asking applicants to include a separate sheet — identified with the applicant’s initials only — that provides a brief summary of any activities the applicant has participated in relating to the environment and describing how the applicant feels his or her career choice will positively impact the environment.

Applications must be postmarked by April 23 and mailed to SAVE, P.O. Box 908, Saugus, MA, 01906, or emailed no later than midnight on April 23 to Devlin at [email protected].
