Mother of Salem shooting victim raising funds for his recovery

The mother of the 26-year-old Lynn victim, identified as Delroy Lindsay, of the Sunday night shooting in Salem on Derby Street created a GoFundMe page to assist with the financial aspect of his recovery.

Kendra Owens organized the fundraiser, with a goal of $20,000, on Thursday as she stated that Sunday was a “devastating day for my son.”

She wrote that “he left the house excited and ready for a great Valentine’s evening at Brothers Taverna, a place he frequented and loved.”

Lindsay was shot, by a man he did not know, after a brawl broke out at the establishment and the suspect, David Avalo of Hyde Park, allegedly fired shots in the adjacent alley, according to Owens, who stated on the GoFundMe page that her son was shot as he was trying to help his friends.

Owens described her son as having a huge heart, outgoing personality and full of laughs.

“You know he was always the one in the group that mended any problems he saw. It was important to him that everyone got along or were at least civil and for this he has suffered,” she wrote. “He goes out of his way to make others laugh but also has the heart of a lion that propels him to protect others. Delroy is strong and he is stubborn.”

According to Salem police, Lindsay is still in the hospital and is stable. His mother wrote that he will put in the work to get better and the emotional support of friends and family is vital to his recovery.

Owens wrote that medical costs will include months of physical rehabilitation. The Salem News reported that Delroy was likely to be paralyzed, but this has not been confirmed by the police.

Owens gives thanks for the continued consideration, love and support as her son begins his battle to recovery. She also includes her Cash App, $kso2020, on the GoFundMe page and asks people to contact her directly for donations larger than $500.

The GoFundMe page has already accumulated more than $13,000. Owens wrote that every dollar helps and encourages people to share the link.
