After allowing 22 points in the first quarter, the Winthrop boys basketball team locked down defensively and defeated Northeastern Conference foe Swampscott, 52-47, on the road Friday afternoon. The Vikings only allowed 25 total points over the final three quarters to earn the win.
Senior captain Cam Conway had a huge game for the Vikings, notching a double-double with 24 points and 14 rebounds, while senior captain Chris Cappuccio added 12 points and eight rebounds.
Winthrop (2-12) plays its season finale Saturday afternoon (2) against Northeast Tech.
For Swampscott, Evan Roth scored 15 points to lead the way, while Jason Aucone added 11 points. Ryan Ward scored eight points, while Jacob Cooke and Cam O’Brien scored four points each.
Swampscott (6-2) wraps up its season with a home game against Masconomet Saturday afternoon (12:30).

Catholic Conference Tournament Semifinal
Malden Catholic 91, St. John’s Prep 77
Rollie Castineyra was the top scorer for the Eagles with 24 points, while Aidan Callahan scored 18 points. Jack Perry was close behind with 17 points and Kyle Webster scored eight points.
St. John’s Prep ends the season with a record of 6-3.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Winthrop 52, Swampscott 28
The Vikings got back to their winning ways Friday afternoon, knocking off Northeastern Conference foe Swampscott at Chris Tsiotos Court.
Maddie Stiglets led the way for the Vikings with 14 points, while Grace Galuris added eight points.
Winthrop (11-4) closes out its season Saturday morning (11) at home against Danvers.
Swampscott (4-4) plays its season finale on the road at Marblehead Sunday (12).
Marblehead 33, Danvers 32 (OT)
The Magicians won a close won over Danvers thanks to great games from Annika Haley at point guard and Fehr Gillett (four points, 10 rebounds)
“This was one of those games my father used to say no one deserved to lose,” Marblehead coach Paul Moran said. “Molly Cronin hit a big three to get us close and force overtime and Emily Clough hit the free throw to win it.”
Marblehead has a quick turnaround with a game against Beverly Saturday morning (8:30).
