St. Mary’s sophomore Jenna Chaplain scored three goals — including two in a span of 10 seconds — to help lift the Spartans girls hockey team to a 3-2 win over undefeated Matignon in the CCL Cup Final Saturday night. Maggie Pierce added two assists in the win.
“It was just a great way for us to end the year,” said St. Mary’s coach Frank Pagliuca. “It’s pretty rare that you get to go out with a win, and it was great for our seniors to be able to experience that. It was an exciting game with a great tournament atmosphere, and we really needed to work hard to pull out the win.”
After a scoreless first period, Chaplain put the Spartans ahead 1-0 with about six minutes to go in the second period. Matignon quickly responded with two goals of its own to take a lead in the final minutes of the second, but then Chaplain scored twice in a 10-second span at the end of the period to put the Spartans ahead for good.
Chaplain’s back-to-back goals late in the second ended up being the difference in the game.
“Jenna is an elite offensive talent, and she really took it upon herself to go out there and score those goals,” said Pagliuca.
St. Mary’s closes out the season with a 15-2-3 record.
“We were fortunate to get out there and play 20 games, and that was our goal at the beginning of the season,” Pagliuca said. “We’ve gotten great support from our school and our conference all year long, and we’re all incredibly grateful for the opportunity to play this year.”
