Itemlive.com asked on Feb. 18: Do you think there should be housing along Route 1 in Saugus? Facebook drew 386 responses with 31 on Twitter.

“No” dominated the poll results with 81 percent of respondents weighing in negatively while 19 percent answered “yes.”

Here is a sampling of the responses on Facebook:

August Blake:

Make it easier to build in places that are already semi-walkable (Cliftondale Square, Monument Square) and/or near bus stops and the bike path. Nobody wants an apartment on the highway, nor is it sustainable. Developers are following the path of least resistance amidst a regional housing shortage.

Criss Nosnibor:

Also Saugus wants the commercial property because it’s higher than residential taxes and will bring in more money. It’s a strategy.

Diane Philbrook:

Route 1 is a death trap waiting to happen.

Katelyne Ortiz:

The traffic there is the worst ever.

Polling and comments were compiled by reporter Trea Lavery.
