SWAMPSCOTT — Long-time School Committee member Ted Delano will not run for reelection this year, he announced at Wednesday night’s committee meeting.

Delano, who has served on the committee for nine years, said that the decision had been made with his immediate family.

“I held the position of being on the School Committee incredibly close to my heart,” Delano said in the meeting. “I have enjoyed the privilege of representing the future leaders of our community, and my decisions were always based on the best interest of our children and the fiduciary responsibility to the district.”

Delano thanked his family, many of whom attended school in the district, and his fellow committee members, past and present, for supporting him through his years on the committee, and said that he felt privileged to have worked with a dedicated and hardworking group.

The remaining money in Delano’s campaign account, $2,323.58, will be donated to the district in the name of Robert Jalbert, father of Mike Jalbert, Delano’s campaign manager and treasurer. Robert Jalbert was killed in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

School Committee Chair Amy O’Connor said that she was sorry to see Delano go.

“It’s not over yet. We’ll still grind you down a little bit,” she joked. “I’ve really enjoyed working with you.”

Delano will continue to serve as a detective with the Swampscott Police Department, where he said he will continue to help the town and its children.

“I had a front row seat in watching amazing students grow, share their stories and demonstrate the commitment to their studies,” Delano said. “It does not take a village. It takes strong dedication from all. We are blue ribbon great.”
