When the news broke that schools would be allowed to play winter sports this year, student-athletes around the North Shore rejoiced at their opportunity to have a successful season. St. Mary’s senior Maiya Bergdorf and Winthrop senior Maura Dorr made the most of that opportunity, as both were able to score their 1,000th career point during the course of the year.
Bergdorf was the first to reach the milestone, becoming the 18th player and seventh girls player in the history of St. Mary’s to reach 1,000 career points on Jan. 15. Bergdorf is also the fifth player in the past four seasons to reach the mark, following Joe Abate-Walsh (1,065 points, 2020), Jalen Echevarria (1,507 points, 2019), Pamela Gonzalez (1,436 points, 2019) and Olivia Nazaire (1,178 points, 2018).
On an interesting note, there are also two current North Shore coaches on the St. Mary’s all-time scoring list. Peabody boys basketball coach Thad Broughton is the Spartans’ all-time leading scorer, finishing his career in 2002 with 2,005 points, while St. Mary’s boys coach David Brown finished his career in 1989 with 1,267 points.
Other players on the St. Mary’s 1,000-point scorer list include Peter Gray (Class of 1982), Derrick Morris (Class of 1995), Ed Lewis (Class of 1995), Robyn Mazin (Class of 1997), Loren Green (Class of 2001), Tyler Grillo (Class of 2009), Tori Faieta (Class of 2011), Nick Gagliolo (Class of 2012), Jennie Mucciarone (Class of 2014), Brianna Rudolph (Class of 2014) and Dennis Bailer (Class of 2015).
Dorr followed 11 days later on Jan. 26, reaching 1,000 points after a 19-point effort against Gloucester. Dorr became the 15th player and fifth girls player to reach the milestone in Winthrop history, and the first since Tayjaun McKenzie and Devin Pulsifer both reached the mark in 2018. First on that Winthrop list is Chris Tsiotos, who finished his career in 1973 with 1,003 points and currently has the honor of the Winthrop High basketball court bearing his name.
Other players on the Winthrop 1,000-point scorer list include Maureen McManus (Class of 1983), Sean Conway (Class of 1986), Elizabeth Doherty (Class of 1993), Lori Thomas (Class of 1993), Michael Mason (Class of 1993), Lawone Bennett (Class of 1997), Sean Burgess (Class of 2002), Anthony Griffin (Class of 2005), Courtney Finn (Class of 2009) and Dino Mallios (Class of 2010).
As for the rest of the area, there’s a host of recognizable names that make the cut.
The Lynn public schools have had a host of 1,000-point scorers in their histories, with Classical boasting 17 players, English boasting 14 players and Tech boasting 14 players.
Classical’s first scorer dates all the way back to the late 1960s, when Peter Mazareas hit the mark in 1969. Joining Mazareas on Classical’s list are Ed Thurman (Class of 1977), Tony Thurman (Class of 1980), Pancho Bingham (Class of 1980), Sandy McGee (Class of 1981), Stu Primus (Class of 1981), Michelle Smith (Class of 1982), Tim Frager (Class of 1986), Dave Anderson (Class of 1988), Nick Lampros (Class of 1992), Calvin Johnson (Class of 1993), Nicole Foisset (Class of 1996), Helen Ridley (Class of 2001), Monqiue Lee (Class of 2004). Vince Spence (Class of 2007), Jasper Grassa (Class of 2010) and Paris Wilkey (Class of 2018).
English has had a 1,000-point scorer in each of the past two seasons, with Jarnel Guzman reaching the mark in 2020 and Alonzo Linton reaching it in 2019. Senior Ademide Badmus was on track to become the third in a row in 2021 before the Bulldogs’ season was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But with recent news that English will play a shortened season beginning in March, Badmus is almost certainly going to add his name to the list. Also on the list for English are Craig High (Class of 1992), Deidre Jackson (Class of 1995), Anthony Anderson (Class of 2000), Jenette Anderson (Class of 2009), Jenicia Duggins (Class of 2010), Ryan Woumn (Class of 2010), Jarrell Byrd (Class of 2010), Keandre Stanton (Class of 2012), Catherine Stinson (Class of 2014), Diondra Woumn (Class of 2014), Freddy Hogan (Class of 2014) and Erick Rosario (Class of 2016).
Tech most recently saw Robert Wallace reach the 1,000-point mark with the Class of 2020. Wallace is joined on that list by Jeff Byrd, Lou Byrd, Corey Foster, Victor Smith, Gary Martin, Jamaal Thornton, Ebony White, Jessica Underwood, Corey Bingham, Sted Bourdeau, Shena Mitchell, Tony Gallo and Richie Warren Jr.
Not to be forgotten, KIPP Academy Lynn Collegiate has also had a pair of 1,000-point scorers in its history. Alex Huffman was the first to reach the mark with the Class of 2015, while Dominic Jette followed in the Class of 2018.
Bishop Fenwick also sports a healthy list of scorers, including two 2,000-point scorers in Casey Arena (Class of 1992) and Sean Connolly (Class of 1998). Making up the 1,000-point scorers for the Crusaders are John Murphy (Class of 1971), Tom Konevich (Class of 1975), Cindy Mulica (Class of 1977), Brody Broughton (Class of 1979), Rob Peachey (Class of 1987), Gina Marcinkowski (Class of 1990), Bill Mandell (Class of 2000), Kerri Burke (Class of 2003), Ryan Sasso (Class of 2007), Nolan DiPanfilo (Class of 2009), Mike Clifford (Class of 2009) and Amy Pelletier (Class of 2011).
Swampscott girls basketball coach Katelyn Leonard is one of 13 players — and the first girls player — to score 1,000 points for the Big Blue, doing so with the Class of 1993. At the top of that list is former Saugus boys coach and current Marblehead girls coach Paul Moran, who finished his career in 1985 as a member of the 2,000-point club with 2,043 points. Also on the list for Swampscott are David Bucklin (Class of 1982), Kyle Mueller (Class of 1984), Kevin Rogers (Class of 1993), Chris Balliro (Class of 1997), Michael Smiley (Class of 2000), Alana Zell (Class of 2001), Alexi Mazareas (Class of 2002), Jason Blydell (Class of 2004), Lizzy Moran (Class of 2009), Tara Nimkar (Class of 2009) and Allie Beaulieu (Class of 2009).
Current Saugus boys basketball co-head coach Joe Bertrand scored 1,000 career points at his alma mater with the Class of 2014. He’s joined by fellow Sachems Pam Thornton, Jen Salas and Norma Waggett.
Marblehead most recently saw a 1,000-point scorer in 2018 when Derek Marino reached the mark. Along with Marino, Magicians Harold Nataupsky (Class of 1982), Yvette Jones (Class of 1982), Tina Angenica (Class of 1982), Kevin Buchholtz (Class of 1982), Chris Buchholtz (Class of 1982), LaTeisha Johnson (Class of 1982) and Ashara Carrington (Class of 1982) also reached the career milestone.
Current NBA star Pat Connaughton is the all-time leading scorer for St. John’s Prep, wrapping up his career in 2012 with 1,713 points. He headlines a list of Eagles that includes David Winey (Class of 1974), Chris Ford Jr. (Class of 1994), Matt Symes (Class of 1999) and Ryan O’Connell (Class of 2008).
