A shortened 2020-2021 season didn’t slow down Marblehead’s Will Shull one bit, as the senior forward led the North Shore in scoring this year. For his exploits on the ice, Shull has been named the 2020-2021 Item Player of the Year for boys hockey.
Shull made the most of his 13 games on the ice, averaging more than two points per game over the course of the season. His 15 goals, 15 assists and 30 total points all led the North Shore, and he capped off his incredible season with a big milestone. On Feb. 8, Shull notched his 100th career point after a four-goal, one-assist performance in a win over Swampscott. An All-Item Team selection in 2019-2020, Shull finishes his Magicians career with 107 total points.
There were also five players named to this year’s All-Item Team in Peabody’s Matt Devin, St. Mary’s senior Colby Magliozzi, St. Mary’s senior Kyle LoNigro, Lynnfield freshman Nick Hubbard and Saugus junior Chris Regnetta.
Devin made an impact right away in his first season with the Tanners, having previously played for the Lynn Jets. He was one of the top scorers in the North Shore, finishing in the top 10 in both goals (tied for second with 12) and assists (tied for fourth with 10). He kept the Tanners in a number of games this year, eventually helping lead Peabody to a Northeastern Conference South Division title.
Magliozzi was the Spartans’ key playmaker in a year where they took home the CCL Cup title over undefeated Archbishop Williams. In addition to netting nine goals, Magliozzi was second in the North Shore in assists with 14. His 23 total points was also second in the area.
LoNigro led St. Mary’s in goals with 12 during the 2020-21 campaign, many of them coming off of assists from Magliozzi. LoNigro also added nine assists of his own, finishing third in the North Shore in total points with 21.
Hubbard had, statistically, the best season of any goaltender in the North Shore in 2020-2021. With a save percentage of 0.957 and a goals against average of 0.88, it was a tough ask to put a puck past Hubbard when he was in net. He only allowed nine goals all season, just five of them coming in 5-on-5 action (three were 5-on-4 goals and one was a 5-on-3 goal). His prowess between the pipes helped the Pioneers finish with a 6-5-3 record and a trip to the Cape Ann League Tournament semifinal round.
Regnetta had a strong junior season for the Sachems, finishing a balanced year with nine goals and 11 assists. His 20 total points ranked fourth in the North Shore.
