Winthrop senior Maura Dorr capped off her high school basketball career on a high note in 2021, and her exploits on the court led to her being named the 2020-2021 Item Player of the Year for girls basketball.
Dorr, who is an accomplished three-sport athlete at Winthrop High, averaged a double-double for the season with 18.4 points and 12 rebounds per game. Add in her four assists and just under two blocks per game, and Dorr was a force to be reckoned with on both ends of the floor. On Jan. 26, Dorr became the 15th Winthrop player and fifth girls player to score her 1,000th career point. She finished just shy of 1,000 rebounds for her career as well.
There were also five players named to this year’s All-Item Team in St. Mary’s senior Maiya Bergdorf, St. Mary’s sophomore Yirsy Queliz, Bishop Fenwick junior Olivia Found, Marblehead senior Emily Clough and Lynnfield senior Ava Buonfiglio.
Bergdorf, who was named Item Player of the Year for the 2019-2020 season, followed up her successful junior year with a strong senior campaign. Bergdorf led the Spartans in scoring with 13.3 points per game and also led the team in total rebounds with 126. Her two-point percentage of 61 percent and her free throw percentage of 82 percent helped lift the Spartans to a 20-3 record and a CCL Cup title.
Queliz was a lynchpin for St. Mary’s on both ends of the floor, contributing 9.3 points per game on the offensive side while also adding 46 steals on defense. But what might’ve been the biggest key this year for Queliz — as it is for any point guard — was the fact that she only committed 32 turnovers over the course of 23 games.
Found was one of the top scorers in the North Shore this season, her first since transferring to Fenwick from Matignon. She averaged 16.8 points per game on 41 percent field goal shooting, adding 3.8 assists and 3.6 rebounds per game. But she wasn’t just an offensive power, as she averaged a stellar 5.8 steals per game on the defensive end.
Clough takes home All-Item Team honors for the second year in a row after averaging a double-double for the second year in a row. Clough nearly matched her junior season stats perfectly, finishing her senior year with 14 points and 12 rebounds per game. She also tacked on four blocks per game, the same amount she averaged as a junior.
Buonfiglio just missed averaging a double-double for the season with the Pioneers, but not by much. In addition to notching 9.6 points and 9.7 rebounds per game as a senior, Buonfiglio acted as a team co-captain and was one of the more consistent performers for Lynnfield all season.
Also getting named as Item All-Stars this season are Nicolette D’Itria, Alyssa Grossi, Kellyn Preira (St. Mary’s); Nasha Arnold, Veronica Tache, Liz Gonzalez (Bishop Fenwick); Caroline Waisnor, Grace Klonsky (Lynnfield); Leila Walton (Marblehead); Emma Bloom, Amber Kiricoples, Abby Bettencourt (Peabody); Fallon Millerick (Saugus); Chloe Rakauskas, Victoria Quagrello, Maddie Hudson (Swampscott); Maddie Stiglets (Winthrop).
