The Winthrop boys soccer team opened up the season on a high note Monday, notching a 2-1 victory over KIPP at Miller Field.
“It was great and I think everyone was just pumped to be out there,” said Winthrop coach Kyle Gagin. “It’s been 16 or 17 months since we’ve kicked a ball, so just to be out here playing is really exciting. It was a great way for us to start the season.”
Anan Cherki scored both goals for the Vikings, while Juan Guauque and Ryan Kfoury each had one assist.
Winthrop (1-0) travels to KIPP Wednesday (4).
For KIPP, Marco Escobar scored the lone goal on an assist from Anderson Rodriguez. Josue DeLeon, Kevin Rodriguez, Jefferson Paz, Anaias Lopez and Chidi Aniekwenagbu also played well in the loss.
“It was so great to be back competing again,” said KIPP coach Jon Langlois. “Once we were able to shake off the pregame jitters, I thought we really played well out there. It may have taken 45-50 minutes to get into our style of play, but we played well once we did.”
KIPP (0-1) hosts Winthrop Wednesday (4).
