The Lynn Tech football team returned to the football field Friday and got right back to business with a 28-20 win on the road at Cathedral.
“It was great to be able to come away with the win and it was definitely a beautiful night for some football,” Tigers interim coach Jason McCuish said. “To be able to play right in the middle of Boston was nice too. The kids were excited. We had to work out a few kinks for sure, but it ended up being a solid game.”
Running back Gabino Melendez led the way for Tech with 18 carries for 108 yards and two touchdowns. Regnar Nival also added a pair of touchdown runs. Quarterback Tyler David completed two passes — both to Michael Welch — for 49 yards. Tech had 295 total yards of offense.
After allowing a touchdown on the opening kickoff, the Tigers responded with two-straight touchdowns. Melendez scored the first on a 24-yard carry and Nival followed that up with a two-yard score to put Tech ahead 14-6.
Cathedral cut the score to 14-12 in the second quarter but another pair of rushing touchdowns from Nival and Melendez put the Tigers over the top.
“It wasn’t really as tight a game as it looked,” McCuish said. “Cathedral returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and we made a couple mistakes. But we started making a run and got back to our football.”
The Tigers (1-0) host Commonwealth Athletic Conference rival Nashoba Friday (6).
