REVERE — The Lynn Jets opened up their shortened spring season Sunday afternoon on the road, falling to new Greater Boston League foe Revere/Malden by a score of 5-2 at Cronin Memorial Rink.
“It was exciting to be back out there no matter how unconventional it was, and it was nice to get into real game action,” said Jets coach Mike Roberts. “We came out strong early and played great, but we made a few mistakes down the stretch and they really hurt us. I liked the effort out there, but we’ve just got to clean up some things.”
Senior captain Matthew Patrie scored both goals for the Jets in the loss, while senior captain Christian Alquinta notched two assists. Junior Jaylen Porter added one assist, while eighth grader Richie Avery and sophomore Steven DiFilippo split time in net.
For Revere/Malden, Nick Summers led the way with two goals and one assist. Santiago Del Rio, Jarden Swanson and Alexio Trichillo each scored one goal, while Matt Bozzi had one assist.
“It was a hard-fought win for us, we had to battle back in the second half and pull out the win,” said Revere/Malden coach Joe Ciccarello. “We weren’t giving our best effort on loose pucks in the first half, and once we cleaned that up we were able to take control. But Lynn battled with us the whole way.”
The Jets struck first, scoring only a few minutes into the first of two 22 1/2-minute halves when Patrie found the back of the net for the first time. Revere/Malden responded with a goal from Trichillo with about 10 minutes left in the first half, but Patrie scored a second time a few minutes later to give the Jets a 2-1 lead going into the second half.
But that’s where the breakdowns started. Revere/Malden scored less than two minutes into the half when Del Rio found the back of the net, then the Patriots jumped ahead on a goal from Summers with just over 15 minutes to play. Revere/Malden added another goal from Summers and one more from Swanson over the next two minutes to run away with the win.
Revere/Malden (1-0) has nearly a full week off before taking on Medford Saturday (3).
Lynn (0-1) plays on the road at Somerville Tuesday (3:30).
“We’re just trying to build some momentum off of what we did well out there,” said Roberts. “Our toughest challenge in this short season is going to be conditioning, so we’re going to work on that as much as we can and keep trying to get better every day.”
