MARBLEHEAD — The Marblehead football team appeared to be in midseason form over the weekend, opening its spring season with a 34-7 win over Northeastern Conference foe Beverly at Piper Field Saturday afternoon.
Junior quarterback Josh Robertson shined in the victory for Marblehead, completing 20-of-26 passes for 188 yards and one touchdown while also rushing for 73 yards and one touchdown.
Sophomore Connor Cronin had eight receptions for 70 yards, one rushing touchdown and a blocked punt that he returned for a touchdown. Junior George Percy — who transferred from St. Mary’s this year — also rushed for one touchdown, while senior captain Miles Smith had one touchdown reception.
The Magicians got things going right away, forcing a Beverly three-and-out and then turning around and getting a 15-yard touchdown run from Cronin on the other side.
The score remained there until there were just over two minutes left in the first half, when Marblehead capped off a 10-play, 62-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run from Percy.
Robertson opened up the third quarter with a 22-yard touchdown run to put Marblehead up 20-0, then Robertson hit Smith for a 14-yard touchdown on the next offensive possession to go up 27-0.
The Magicians capped off their scoring with just over eight minutes to play, when Cronin broke through the line, blocked a punt, scooped it up and took it back for a touchdown to make it 34-0. Beverly added one score with a few minutes left, but the Magicians were able to cruise to victory.
Marblehead (1-0) is slated to host Peabody Saturday afternoon (2).
