To the editor:
Born and brought up living in Salem, I was somewhat reluctant to move to Lynn: It had a stigma I will not choose not to dwell on.
Leaving my townhouse and moving to a new city was hard. But my son and I purchased a two-family in a nice, well-maintained neighborhood.
We settled in and met some wonderful people and I eventually asked, who is my ward city councilor? I found out, at the time, it was the late Charlie O’Brien. My neighbor who had lived on my street for more that 55 years asked if I would join him with a few others to meet Darren Cyr, who was running for Ward 3, as Mr. O’Brien was moving to a councilor-at-large seat.
We sat and discussed the issues and picked his brain. He answered all my questions, so I decided to support Darren’s candidacy.
I also attended some council meetings in order to listen and learn, so I could understand the city instead of just complaining. I received a good education and found out that councilors do not just sit by and attend parades, kiss babies, and collect a check.
Let me share a few things I know about Darren Cyr.
He has always returned my calls in a reasonable amount of time and never ignored my concerns.
In 2010 during a spring storm, a tree came down, blocking wires, and we were told it would be several hours before power was restored. Less than two hours later, a truck came down the street: It was Darren with coolers loaded with ice, which he dispersed to all in need.
Worried about an abandoned house in back of mine, I called Darren and he came by that night and observed the building’s condition: Two days later, it was all boarded up.
When I contacted the city to complain about rats, I was told rodent control was running behind in responding to complaints. I contacted Darren and he knocked on my door that Saturday morning with four rat traps. He said the city would be by, “but these should hold you over until then.”
He also addressed concerns about a truck and a car parked in a front yard and he addressed speeding on our street and got speed limit signs posted on both ends of the street.
I got to know Darren Cyr through his actions and his love for this city. That love cannot be measured in rhetoric. He is a man who rolls up his sleeves and is not afraid to work for the greater good of this fine city.
Darren Cyr has the experience and he is the man we need now to follow up the leadership shown by Mayor McGee and move the city forward.
This is why I support Darren Cyr for mayor
