LYNN — Fire broke out at an Elm Street building Monday afternoon, but there was no damage to the interior of the home.
Lynn firefighters responded to the blaze, which occurred just outside the first floor unit of 12 Elm St., at approximately 3:30 p.m, according to Fire Capt. Joseph Zukas.
The fire was small and located up against the house, but caused no interior damage. It began as a mulch fire that was caused by a cigarette, Zukas said.
Smoke from the fire entered a crawl space beneath the porch before entering the building. Zukas said that residents thought there was a fire inside the building because of the smoke.
He said department apparatus from Western Avenue, Boston Street and Pine Hill quickly extinguished the fire.
“This building is a large apartment building so the result could have been much worse if it was late at night and they didn’t see the smoke right away,” Zukas said.
He said the incident continues an ongoing series of fires that have been caused by the careless disposal of cigarettes.
