The Lynn Classical boys basketball team put it all together on the defensive end Wednesday, cruising to a 78-35 win on the road at Greater Boston League foe Malden.
“We forced a lot of turnovers and our defense was great all night,” Classical coach Marvin Avery said. “That led to a lot of points in transition and really got everything going.”
Seniors Jayden Thornton (23 points) and Jadden Gonzalez (17 points) led the way for Classical. Freshman Marquese Avery also added 16 points.
Classical (3-1) hosts cross-town rival English Friday afternoon (4).
“It was an all around great game for us, especially heading into Friday,” Avery said. “We’re feeling good about where we’re at heading into the English game.”
GIRLS BASKETBALL
English 43, Everett 37
The Bulldogs had to dig deep to pull out a win over a tough GBL foe Wednesday.
“We have a young team, but the girls are very coachable and they take the lessons from practice right into the game,” said English coach Mackenzie Charles. “It was great to see them step up and meet the challenge they were faced with (Wednesday) to pull out the win.”
Maddy Laurino and Rosie Chheang each scored 11 points to pace the offense, while Alisha Jean added six points and eight rebounds.
English (4-0) plays on the road at rival Classical Friday evening (6).
“The rivalry is back and we’re excited to head over there Friday,” said Charles. “We definitely have a little motivation because we haven’t won in that gym since I’ve been at English, so we’re looking forward to hopefully turning that around.”
Malden 51, Classical 47
Classical went back and forth with GBL foe Malden on the road Wednesday, but the Rams came up just short.
“We just ended up digging ourselves in too deep of a hole in the first half,” said Classical coach Tom Sawyer. “Credit to our girls, they battled back hard and had a great third quarter, but Malden just made a few more plays than we did.”
Lauren Hennessey led the offensive attack for the Rams with 18 points, while Ava Thurman scored 11 points and Molly Mannion added six points.
Classical (2-2) hosts rival English Friday evening (6).
“It’s always an exciting night to play our rival, but it’s going to be even more special because it’s going to be our Senior Night,” said Sawyer. “Just the fact that they’re getting this celebration is great, and we’re excited that we’ll be able to honor them.”
