School Sports Roundup: Lynn Classical swimming splits first two meets of the season

The Lynn Classical swim team may have been the last Lynn team to start its season, but the Rams rattled off back-to-back meets to start the year on Wednesday and Thursday. The Rams split the two meets against Greater Boston League foes, beating Somerville and losing to Revere.

Classical opened up its season with a bang, earning a 88-79 victory over Somerville in a virtual meet Wednesday.

The Rams were led by Daniel Puma, who finished as a double-winner after placing first in both the 50 freestyle (26.44 seconds) and the 100 breaststroke (1:20.47). Other winners for Classical were Adam Mariano in the 100 butterfly (1:05.47), Camille Mendonca in the 100 freestyle (1:04.50), Sydney Finnigan in the 400 freestyle (6:30.51) and Kristen Johnston in diving (130.13).

The Rams also earned two relay wins, with the team of Mendonca, Mariano, Puma and Finnigan winning the 200 medley relay (2:10.01) and the team of Puma, Mariano, Aleana Benedetto and Yassine Bakhouch winning the 200 freestyle relay (1:58.43).

Next up for the Rams was a meet against Revere, where Classical fell 91-71.

Despite the loss, Classical still had a first place finish with Mendonca winning the 100 Backstroke. Benedetto placed second in the 200 freestyle, Mariano placed second in the 100 freestyle and Finnigan  had a second place finish in the 500 freestyle. Puma placed third in the 200 individual medley.

The 400 freestyle relay team of Mariano, Finnigan, Mendonca and Puma also earned a second place finish.  

Ashley Christiansen (200 freestyle), Ava Anderson (50 freestyle), Felix Pol (500 freestyle) and Lianny Burgos (100 backstroke) all showed some great improvement Thursday. 

Classical (1-1) swims against Malden Monday (5).

VOLLEYBALL

Lynn Tech 3, Nashoba 2

The Tigers battled back from two sets down to pull off the five-set victory. Tech won by set scores of 16-25, 21-25, 25-10, 25-18, 15-2.

“This is the second time we’ve rallied back from two sets down, and I told the girls that they’re starting to give me gray hairs,” said Tech coach Kaitlyn Wechsler. “We just came out and started slow and made uncharacteristic mistakes, but we were able to regroup and play our style of volleyball the rest of the way to get the win.”

Derlande Montas had six kills and six aces in the win for Tech, while Daleri Garcia had 12 aces and two kills. Jasinairy Camilo added five aces and six assists, while Nadesha Martinez had five aces.

Tech (4-2) plays on the road at Fellowship Monday (4).

Beverly 3, Saugus 1

The Sachems fell by set scores of 11-25, 23-25, 25-12, 9-25. 

Saugus (2-3) hosts Peabody Thursday (5:30).

BOYS TRACK

Saugus 35, Winthrop 16

Saugus got wins from Jarod DeSousa in the high jump (5-4) and the 55-meter dash (7.43), Kyle McLaughlin in the 300 (43.1), Andrew Beleya in the 600 (2:04.4), Elijah Tapia-Gately in the 1000 (3:05.8) and Chris Bluette in the one-mile (5:57.3).

Saugus (1-0) runs on the road at Gloucester Thursday (4).

Winthrop’s lone win came from Dillon Riley in the shot put (32-8).

Winthrop (0-1) hosts Salem Thursday (4).

Marblehead 56, Danvers 30

Winners for Marblehead were Camden Heafitz in the high jump (5-4), Richard Wade in the shot put (37-5 3/4), Dylan Rose in the 55 dash (6.9), Schuyler Schmitt in the 300 (39.2) and Loeden Rodrigues in the one-mile (4:38).

Marblehead (1-0) runs against Peabody Wednesday (4).

GIRLS TRACK

Winthrop 63, Saugus 15

Isabella Mahoney and Skyla Zappulla were both double-winners for the Vikings, with Mahoney winning the high jump (4-6) and the 55 dash (7.88) and Zappulla winning the shot put (24-5 3/4) and the 55 hurdles (11.82). Other winners for Winthrop were Beatriz Holzbach in the 1000 (3:44.8), Elizabeth Camey in the one-mile (7:07.1) and April Feruson in the two-mile (15:12).

Winthrop (1-0) hosts Salem Thursday (4).

Saugus got wins from Madi Femino in the 300 (50.4) and Jessica Bremberg in the 600 (1:54.5).

Saugus (0-1) runs on the road at Gloucester Thursday (4).

Danvers 44, Marblehead 42

Marblehead got wins from Devin Whalen in the 55 hurdles (9.4), Teagan Masters in the 55 dash (7.7), Josie Poulin in the 300 (46.6), Juliet Poss in the 1000 (3:34.9) and Claire Tips in the one-mile (5:54.2).

Marblehead (0-1) runs against Peabody Wednesday (4).
