After getting its rivalry game against Lynn Tech canceled at the last minute on Friday, the KIPP football team scrambled to find an opponent in Division 7 power West Boylston for Saturday afternoon. After a back-and-forth battle, the Panthers came up just short in a 21-20 loss at Manning Field.
“We always want to win no matter how much prep time we have, but we obviously knew coming into this that it would be tough to go up against a strong team on one and a half day’s notice,” said KIPP coach Jim Rabbitt. “But our guys came out, battled through adversity and fought hard for 48 minutes. I can’t ask for more than that.”
Despite the loss, running back Daniel Oluwasuyi carried the KIPP offense on his back with 20 carries for 216 yards.
“We had a lot of long, sustained drives in the game and that was largely due to Daniel,” said Rabbitt. “He really carried our offense all day.”
KIPP (2-1) is set to host Lowell Catholic Saturday evening (6) back at Manning Field. Since Lowell Catholic is slotted into the Commonwealth Athletic Conference Small Division along with KIPP this year, the game will be for the division title — which KIPP won in 2019.
“The kids know this is for the league title and they want to hold onto it for another year,” said Rabbitt. “We’re going to watch the film, move past this one and prepare for a very different type of team this week. We’re excited for the challenge.”
