LYNN — A crowd gathered outside of My Brother’s Table on Willow Street Tuesday afternoon to watch a car get towed from the garden where it had landed after an accident.
“It sounded like a 50-millimeter Howitzer going off,” said David Hunt, who lives nearby and walked over to the scene after hearing the crash.
The silver Hyundai landed on top of a small tree, which was still lodged underneath the car as it was towed away.
Lynn police and firefighters responded to the scene at approximately 2 p.m.
The vehicle was struck by another car on Washington Street, which caused the driver to lose control and accelerate over the curb, before landing in the garden in front of the building, Lynn Police Lt. Michael Kmiec said.
The woman who was driving the Hyundai was transported to a hospital with minor injuries, said Kmiec, who declined to identify her.
The car’s door was crushed and two of its tires had been knocked off the axles. The brake light and license plate had both been completely separated from the vehicle.
Lynn resident Jason Walker said that the car crashed in the exact spot where a handicapped woman usually sits, although she wasn’t there Tuesday.
Walker had been sitting inside the soup kitchen building when the crash occurred. “Maybe it wasn’t warm enough. Thankfully she wasn’t there today.”
