A slow start for both teams quickly turned into a rout for the Classical boys basketball team, with the Rams topping Malden 52-31 at home in the first round of the Greater Boston League Tournament Wednesday afternoon.
“We cleaned up a few early mistakes and got the job done,” Classical coach Marvin Avery said. “We did what we had to do to win (Wednesday). The defense was great in the second half. We made some adjustments and I was really proud of the effort on the defensive end. On the offensive end we have to limit mistakes going forward.”
Angel Garcia Figueroa played a great game from start to finish with 14 points and eight rebounds. Jayden Thornton had a team-high 17 points, with 11 coming in the fourth quarter. Marquese L’Italien Avery added nine points and four steals while Jadden Gonzalez added seven.
“Angel came to play (Wednesday),” Marvin Avery said. “He’s our bread and butter on offense, when he goes we go. He had an outstanding game. I can’t say enough about him, he’s had a really great year for us.”
Both teams started slow in a sloppy first quarter. A 3-pointer from Avery eventually got the Rams started and they went up 5-0 after another basket from Figueroa.
But the defense is what helped Classical build a lead in the first half. The Rams led 12-5 at the end of the first and built on their lead in the second quarter to go into the half up 21-11.
Thornton started a Classical run in the third with an and-one and Avery capped it with a three to go ahead 31-15. Figueroa also added eight points in the third and it was all Classical from there as the Rams rolled to the win.
The Rams (5-2) travel to Everett in the GBL Tournament semifinals Thursday (6).
