To the editor:
With another election around the corner, the people of Swampscott have the opportunity to consider the objectives and experience of those seeking our vote. I am writing in support of Peter Spellios for his continuation as a Select Board member.
In 2009, I joined a small band of volunteers hoping to create a dog park. They had already been planning it for some time at that point, and it became one of my longest volunteer gigs, as the park opened in 2019. As with anything new, there were contentious moments and the project stalled numerous times. What it needed was a solid push behind it to break it through all the circular discussion and fear. I give much credit to Peter Spellios for providing that final push, and for the strength of character he displayed in essentially shielding us from negativity so that we would have the breathing room to move forward.
Many individuals in town do not have yards, but now have a large outdoor space where they can play with their pet, converse with friends, and make new acquaintances. What was once a weeded lot is now a vibrant little corner of outside space where the local food pantry grows vegetables, neighbors can compost their food waste, and local hikers can access trails.
All of this takes active volunteers. But it also takes people in Town Hall to back up the efforts of the volunteers. I appreciate that Mr. Spellios sees the value in what small groups of committed citizens can do.
When elections come around, it seems there is always a call from some to replace everything current in favor of something different. I, however, see more value in experience, proven dedication to public service, and the necessary diplomatic qualities that are important in helping to move proposed ideas to the finish line.
I will be putting my vote behind Peter Spellios, who I see as someone that works to push all well thought out projects forward, not just those of personal interest. Having volunteered my own time, I can appreciate someone who volunteers large amounts of his time for the town, and who treats an elected volunteer position with the same care, commitment, and professionalism of a full-time job. I believe he is performing that job admirably.
