LYNN — “I don’t feel any different,” said Mary Landry, who turned 100 years old on Wednesday.
Four generations of Landry’s family were in attendance at her birthday celebration, along with Ward 5 Councilor Dianna Chakoutis, state Rep. Peter Capano (D-Lynn) and state Sen. Brendan Crighton (D-Lynn).
The elected officials each presented Mary with a certificate commemorating her milestone.
Landry, originally from North Carolina, worked as a switchboard operator in Lynn before eventually moving to the former Union Hospital, where she was employed until her retirement. Since coming to Lynn she has become a huge Boston Red Sox fan, a team that she follows religiously.
“Her life basically revolves around the Red Sox now,” said Wayne Compton of his great aunt.
“They’re not doing too good this year,” he said, referring to the team getting off to a slow start this season.
The birthday celebration featured a sparkler candle, an array of snacks, and a strawberry shortcake prepared by Landry’s caretaker, Mabel Santana.
“I’ve only known her for a couple months,” said Santana, who began working for Landry in December. “But she’s already captured my heart.”
While Landry was grateful for the centennial celebration held in her honor on Wednesday, she did not have any other birthday festivities planned for the day.
“I’m too old to make plans,” she said.
