SAUGUS — Saugus police are investigating after a man in a wheelchair was struck by a car Thursday morning, Chief Michael Ricciardelli reported.
According to Ricciardelli, police responded around 11:45 a.m. to a report of a man hit by a car in the area of 1500 Broadway (Route 99).
Upon arrival, officers located a 60-year-old Revere man, who uses a wheelchair, who had been struck by a blue Chrysler 300 sedan. The man was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital where the extent of his injuries is currently unknown.
After an on-scene investigation, police determined that the driver, a 74-year-old Malden woman, did not see the man as he crossed the roadway in close proximity to a traffic light when she entered the road during a green light after exiting a parking lot and making a left turn.
There are no crosswalks or pedestrian lights in the vicinity where the crash took place, Ricciardelli said. He said the driver remained on the scene.
Neither person was identified by Saugus police, who are actively investigating the incident.
