More candidates emerge for political seats in Lynn

April 13, 2021 by Allysha Dunnigan

LYNN — Lynn has seen a handful of new candidates pull papers for ward councilor and School Committee positions over the past couple of weeks.

Darren Cyr, Michael Satterwhite, and Jared Nicholson remain the only mayoral candidates, but ward councilors will see three new challengers in the upcoming race.

Elizabeth Figueroa pulled nomination papers for Ward 2 councilor, a position currently held by Rick Starbard. Figueroa said she humbly submitted her nomination papers to run for the City Council and asked Ward 2 residents to join her in this endeavour.

“All together, we can have a better community,” she said.

George Meimeteas submitted nomination papers for Ward 3, a seat currently held by Cyr. Meimeteas, who ran unsuccessfully for the seat two years ago, will face Coco Alinsug, who pulled papers for the seat last month.

Meimeteas said he is running for Ward 3 councilor after seeing how the city’s financial problems have impacted the citizens of Lynn.

“I have concerns over continued tax increases and representation for our senior citizens,” he said. “If elected, I would make sure the people’s voices are heard and represented through my ward. I would like to see transparency of how and where the taxpayers’ money is being spent. We need accountability as to how tax revenue is being allocated.”

Meimeteas said that taxes are out of control and “it is time to move Lynn in the right direction.”

Ward 5 Councilor Dianna Chakoutis gained an opponent last week when Sandra Suarez pulled papers for the position.

In addition to ward councilors, the School Committee added Sandra Lopez as a candidate when she pulled nomination papers on April 5.
