If you’ve been following the KIPP boys soccer team this year, you know Marco Escobar has been all over the score sheet. And Wednesday night wasn’t any different.
The Panthers earned a 4-0 win over Nashoba, with Escobar’s three goals leading the way along with another goal from Kenny De Leon. Escobar is now at 17 goals on the season and tallied his fourth three-goal game of the year.
“Marco is a great player,” KIPP coach Jon Langlois said. “Once he gets going, he’s hard to stop. And we still have another year out of him, so we’re excited for next season.”
Anderson Rodriguez also added a nice assist on a long ball down field, one of many examples of a young player stepping up for the Panthers this year.
“We have so many amazing young players that have been feeding Kenny all year long and stepping up all over the field in their own right,” Langlois said. “We have a handful of eighth graders. Cristian Garcia Bermudez is one that has been playing so beyond his age level and controls the outside of the field. I couldn’t have asked for a better group of kids this year.”
At 6-2-1, the Panthers would have qualified for the state tournament with the win in their first season in the MIAA in a normal year. But for now, they’ll face their toughest test and a good measuring stick for the future in Division I Methuen on Monday (4) and Wednesday (4).
“We’re already thinking about next year being great,” Langlois said. “This shortened season has been a great preseason to what’s ahead. Methuen will be a great opportunity for us to buckle down for sure.”
