Revere to mark resident-only spaces at beach in addition to parking meters

REVERE — Nearly 200 resident-only parking spaces will be created on the west side of Revere Beach Boulevard, according to a new agreement between the city and the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation.

The DCR, which operates the beach, began installing parking meters on the road last week, and originally planned to have them on both sides of the street.

Now, no meters will be installed on the west side from Revere Street to Carey Circle, and 24/7 resident-only spaces will be created in their place and along all of Ocean Avenue. The city will also implement seasonal resident parking in neighborhoods abutting Revere Beach.

“I believe that this is a fair and reasonable balance that protects Revere residents and keeps our beach accessible to the people of Revere,” said state Rep. Jessica Giannino (D-Revere). “By creating resident-only parking along the residential/business side of Revere Beach Boulevard, as well as on Ocean Avenue, Revere residents who live on the beach will be able to continue parking in front of their homes while also allowing any Revere resident who wishes to utilize the beach the opportunity to continue to park for free in designated areas.”

“Our top priority in collaborating with Commissioner (Jim) Montgomery and DCR was to minimize the impact this program will have on our residents,” Mayor Brian Arrigo said.

Parking for non-residents will cost $1.25 per hour between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m, and there is no time limit on the meters. Payment by coin, card or smartphone app will not be required until May 1, but in the future, visitors will be required to pay to park from April 15 to Oct. 15.

Revenue from the meters, which are also being installed in other DCR-operated locations around the Greater Boston area, will support the statewide park system.

“These changes will provide a significant amount of no-cost parking to the people of Revere,” said state Rep. Jeffrey Turco (D-Winthrop). “That said, I look forward to working with my colleagues in the Legislature to make sure that monies raised on Revere Beach stay on Revere Beach.”
