To the editor:
Peter Spellios is a man of principle and of accomplishment, and I enthusiastically support his bid for re-election to the Swampscott Select Board.
During his recent tenure on the board, Peter has been a leader in addressing issues of racial equity. Under his leadership, the board issued a compelling statement against the killing of George Floyd.
More recently, Peter has been very much engaged in promoting meaningful dialogue in Swampscott on important matters concerning race — these are discussions which rightfully are taking place all over the country, and I am pleased that Swampscott is also having these conversations.
While serving on the Select Board for the past six years, Peter has taken the lead on many important initiatives involving taxes, town financial planning, school construction and, particularly important to me, affordable housing.
He has been instrumental in moving the rail trail forward and, given that his opponent has stated her opposition to using eminent domain to acquire small sections of privately-held property, I fear the rail trail will not happen if he is not re-elected.
I have known Peter for almost 20 years. I know him to be a thoughtful and considerate man of extraordinary intelligence, energy and focus. Moreover, he is a man of conviction and principle. Swampscott will be well served by his continuing the work he has begun while on the Select Board.
