The Lynn English football team got off to an ideal start Friday night but things went downhill fast in a 42-12 loss at Everett.

“Obviously it’s a four-quarter game,” said English coach Chris Carroll. “We were down, 20-6, at the half and the game was a lot more competitive than the score would say at that point. We had our chance in the first half to make things a little closer but we just missed a couple of those plays.”

DJ Brathwaite started the night with an interception and did the bulk of the receiving work for the Bulldogs. Jessie Maggs ran in a 1-yard touchdown to put the Bulldogs ahead, 6-0.

But Everett ripped off six straight touchdowns. Angelo Person capped off the scoring for English with a 5-yard run in the fourth quarter.

“Everett is a team that is around top three in the state every year,” Carroll said. “So you have to make plays when you get the chance and you can’t get penalties. In the third quarter things snowballed with some turnovers. They are talented.”

English (0-1) will try to rebound with two straight games at Manning Field starting with Revere on Friday (6).

“I’m proud of my kids,” Carroll said. “They played hard and the first half was a competitive half. But they wore us down and we have a lot of work to do.”

Angel Martinez had a monster day for the Crusaders with a receiving touchdown and two rushing touchdowns along with a pair of interceptions. Tucker Destino also rushed for a pair of scores and Chrys Wilson threw two touchdowns. Jake Connelly caught one touchdown in the win.

“Angel was on full display (Friday), that’s for sure,” Fenwick coach Dave Woods said. “We really tried to spread the ball around to everybody on offense and on defense everyone pitched in with plays as well. It’s a special group of kids.”

Fenwick ends the season at 6-0 and graduates 17 seniors.

“It was tough at first with a lot of things out of our control, but once we got out there the kids handled it just like they always had,” Woods said. “They did it for each other. It’s a tight group and there’s a lot of love. They did all we could ask for.”
