School Sports Roundup: Winthrop football takes down Masconomet to close season

The Winthrop football team closed out a memorable spring season on a high note Saturday, beating Northeastern Conference foe Masconomet by a score of 16-14 in the season finale at Miller Field. 

Bobby Hubert rushed for 84 yards and a touchdown in the win, while Chris Ferrara rushed for 45 yards and one touchdown. Quarterback Dillon Doherty completed 5-of-6 passes for 45 yards, while Mikey Chaves added three receptions for 26 yards.

Winthrop wraps up the season at 5-1 and is the NEC South co-champion.

BOYS SOCCER

Revere 5, Lynn English 1

Mike Maldonado had a huge game for the Patriots with one goal and three assists, while Diego Salcedo had one goal and one assist. Latrell Ashby added one goal, while David Paiva had one assist. 

Revere (3-1) travels to Medford Tuesday (3:45).

Jalen Coriolan scored the lone goal in the loss for English. Dario Gomez and Jose Aleman also played well for the Bulldogs. 

English (1-1-1) plays on the road at Somerville Tuesday (4).

GIRLS SOCCER

Revere 6, Lynn English 0

Carolina Bettero led the offensive attack for Revere with three goals, while Sofia Chorqi and Samarah Paiva each scored their first career varsity goals. 

Revere (2-1-1) travels to Classical Monday (4).

English (0-2-1) hosts Somerville Tuesday night (7).

WRESTLING

NHSCA Nationals

The St. John’s Prep wrestling program was well-represented at the National High School Coaches Association National Championships over the weekend in Virginia Beach, Va., with six wrestlers taking to the mat over the weekend. 

Senior Nick Curley was the highlight of the weekend for the Eagles, winning the national championship at 113 pounds after defeating Evan Kinney of Chelmsford in the finals. 

Sophomore Tyler Knox was named an All-American at 120 pounds, while freshman Dylan Greenstein was named an All-American at 195 pounds. 

Sophomore Rawson Iwanicki finished with a 4-2 record at 145 pounds over the weekend, while sophomore Alex Schaeublin went 2-2 at 106 pounds and junior Adam Schaeublin went 2-2 at 120 pounds.
