We applaud U.S. Representative Seth Moulton for pledging his support for the proposed Black Lives Matter mural on Essex Street in Lynn.
Without calling them out by name, Moulton brought the substantial weight of his office to bear on Lynn city councilors who have repeatedly tried to block the mural for more than a year.
It’s rare for a national officeholder to step into a controversial local issue, but Moulton sided with mural co-sponsors Carlos Prudencio and Damianny Garrido in their year-long struggle to overcome council resistance to the Essex Street mural.
The two English High School students have stood their ground even as councilors tossed weak excuses, legal opinions, and a Central Square alternative mural site at them. We hope Rep. Moulton’s call to action for councilors to do the right thing gets heard loud and clear.
“The Essex Street Mural will stand as a reminder to all of us, but especially those of us in positions of power and privilege, that we have a lot of work to do until that saying is no longer aspirational but fact,” Moulton said on Monday.
