Salem announces Artists’ Row Market Day Launch Party

April 26, 2021 by Allysha Dunnigan

SALEM — The city will be hosting the Artists’ Row Market Day Launch Party Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 24 Derby St.

Masks are required.

Visitors can meet local artists in their natural habitats, participate in free hands-on art activities, sign up for workshops, listen to live music, eat and shop. The Matt Savage Quartet will perform live from 4 to 7 p.m.

There will be a variety of shops offering their wares, including ChagallPAC, a community of artists who collaborate across disciplines and explore different kinds of art.

“We create performances that involve audience participation and expand to the newest reaches of contemporary performance art,” said ChagallPAC.

ChagallPAC will host an array of handcrafted jewelry, fiber arts, poetry books, and a painting booth. Visitors will also be able to engage with a variety of COVID-compliant hands-on art activities and musical performances.

ChagallPAC is located in Unit 1 on Artists’ Row and is currently open on Fridays from noon to 6 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.  After Saturday’s launch party, the shop will adjust the hours to every weekday from noon to 6 p.m. and weekends from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. To learn more, visit chagallpac.com.

Beverly Bees will also host a table where visitors can learn how to help bees by planting a bee-friendly garden; view honeybees at work in their observation hive; and view a variety of handmade, locally harvested beeswax candles and gifts.

Their own raw honey will also be available for sale along with native bee houses, supplies and bee-friendly organic seeds and plants.

Beverly Bees is located in Unit 2 on Artists’ Row. While perusing handmade beeswax candles, award-winning honey and skincare products — all made from the shop’s own bees — guests can watch candlemakers design candles in hundreds of shapes: from pillars, tapers, votives, pumpkins, skulls, wolves, dragons, witches, zombies and more.

It is currently open on Thursdays and Fridays from noon to 5 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. After the launch, it will be open Wednesdays through Fridays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, visit beverlybees.com.

Another shop will include Shindig!, which creates and collects unique jewelry art, clothing and more. Visiting artist Jim Motta of Wicked Kreations by Jim will accompany this booth — essentially an expanded version of the shop which includes antiques, one-of-a-kind fashion, patches and pins.

Shindig! is a family-owned-and-operated small business that says it’s “dedicated to creating cool things with as little waste as possible.”

Shindig! Is open every day except Tuesdays from noon to 6 p.m.

Everyone Explores will also be present at the Market Day Launch Party with its newly-appointed Public Artist-in-Residence Malorie Landgreen.

Located in Unit 5 on Artists’ Row, Everyone Explores will offer two different hands-on art activities.

One activity offers participants an opportunity to make a doodle to reflect their mood that day. Another activity allows participants to create small sculptures out of Sculpey clay.

All work produced during these workshops will potentially be incorporated into one of many experiential art installations occurring over the next eight months of Landgreen’s residency. Learn more about Landgreen’s work by visiting www.colorboxindustries.com/everyoneexplores.com.

The Lobster Shanty restaurant will also be open every day from noon until midnight for both dine-in and take out service. Outdoor seating is available, and there is a newly-expanded menu on view at lobstershantysalem.com.

Artists’ Row was originally built as a marketplace and now consists of four artists’ stalls and a restaurant.

The Artists’ Row Initiative is a seasonal program run by the City of Salem’s Office of Arts and Culture. It provides space for artists and artisans looking to build their audience and/or business through daily engagement with residents and visitors to Salem. Visitors can also enjoy live music outside on Artists’ Row every Friday and Saturday night throughout the summer. To learn more, visit salem.com/artists-row.
