The Classical football team fell behind early on the road at Medford but tightened things up the rest of the way to grab its first win of the season, a 22-6 victory over the Mustangs.
“It was actually a really good game,” Rams coach Brian Vaughan said. “Medford played really well. They started it off right at us and actually scored first on a long screen pass.”
Nicholas Galeazzi led the way on the ground with a pair of rushing touchdowns for Classical while also adding a two-point reception on a throw from Brian Vaughan, Jr. Emil Bruno also had a nice night on the ground, tacking on one touchdown while Marquese Avery had one two-point conversion rush.
But the story of the night was the Rams defense. After allowing an early score on an 80-yard screen pass from Medford, Classical had a great day with multiple sacks and an interception from Matt Carrillo.
“The defense played really well,” Vaughan said. “We had about eight of nine sacks and Matt made a nice play on an interception.”
Despite nice performances for Galeazzi and Bruno, Classical’s offense actually left some points on the field, something Vaughan and company will hope to erase moving forward.
“We had a bunch of penalties on the offensive side, holding, illegal procedures and blocks in the back that brought back four touchdowns for us,” Vaughan said. “The offense got a little sloppy but that’s also something you expect with a young group.”
The Rams (1-1) are now gearing up for their Thanksgiving make-up game with rival English Friday (6).
“It’s always a big one,” Vaughan said. “I give a lot of credit to (English coach) Chris Carroll. I coached Chris and a lot of those guys on that staff. This is also the first Classical-English game played at night. It’s going to be a fun one.”
