Lily Newhall tossed a no-hitter to open the season and the St. Mary’s softball team rolled to a dominating 27-0 win on the road at Catholic Central League rival Bishop Fenwick Monday.

Newhall tallied 11 strikeouts with just two walks in the performance

“Lily did very well,” first-year coach Spartans Frank Pagliuca said. “She moved the ball around well, hit all her spots and was really efficient with her pitches.”

Newhall also added a home run at the plate, while Alyssa Grossi had a huge day offensively with two home runs, a triple and eight RBI. Angelina Catino went 5-for-5 with two RBI, while Sam Porazinski went 4-for-6 at the plate. Nicolette D’Itria and Julia Nickolau came off the bench to get multiple base hits.

“It was a really good day at the plate,” Pagliuca said. “Three home runs leaving the park and a ton of extra base hits, it was a good way to start the year.”

St. Mary’s (1-0) hosts Archbishop Williams Saturday (12).

Fenwick (0-1) is at Matignon Saturday (12).

BOYS TENNIS

Marblehead 3, Masconomet 2

In the first match in two years and on newly resurfaced home courts at the high school, the Magicians won a very close match against Masconomet.

Marblehead got wins from freshman Mika Garber in first singles (6-1, 6-1) and then from the doubles teams of juniors Kipp Schauder and Dwight Foster (6-3, 6-3) and seniors Daniel Farfel and Thomas Dack (6-2, 6-3).

Marblehead (1-0) takes on Swampscott Friday (4).

GIRLS TENNIS

Masconomet 3, Marblehead 2

The Magicians got wins from both of their doubles teams on the day, with the team of Emily Clough and Lauren Podgur winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 and the team of Leah Saulnier and Ava Ullian winning 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.

“Our first match in two years could not have been any closer,” said Marblehead coach Tracy Ackerman. “(Masconomet’s) first two singles players were very tough, and I think we came out a little nervous and tight. Our doubles really stayed tough and hung on to both win their sets. I have to give Masco credit.”

Marblehead (0-1) takes on Swampscott Friday (4).

“Our senior-laden team is hungry for the chance to be out there, have fun, and be a tough competitor in the conference,” said Ackerman.
