School Sports Roundup: Peabody baseball hangs on to beat Beverly

PEABODY — Thanks to a great throw from Tanners left fielder Jacob Palharas to gun down the tying run on a double play in the top of the seventh inning, the Peabody baseball team hung on to take down Northeastern Conference foe Beverly by a score of 6-5 at Peabody Veterans Memorial High School Wednesday afternoon. 

On the offensive side of things, Juan Tolentino and Brendan Smith each contributed two RBI for the Tanners. Joey Raymond added a double and one RBI, while Ryan Knight also had one RBI.

Justin Powers earned the win on the mound for Peabody, tossing six innings and allowing four runs. Evan DeLillo earned the save.

The Tanners held a 5-0 lead in the top of the fifth and looked to be cruising to victory, but Beverly battled back with five runs in the final two innings. The Panthers even loaded the bases in the top of the seventh before Palharas ended the game when he caught a fly ball and threw out the tagging runner at home.

Peabody (2-1) takes on Swampscott Friday night (7).

BASEBALL

St. Mary’s 9, Malden Catholic 0

Kory Ouellette had a big day at the plate for the Spartans, going 4-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI in the win. Terence Moynihan (1-for-2) also had two RBI, while Lucas Fritz (2-for-3) and Tommy Falasca (1-for-1) each had one RBI.

The Spartans’ pitching staff combined to only allow one hit on the day, with Aiven Cabral earning the win after tossing four innings and allowing no runs on no hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. Falasca (two innings, no runs, one hit, two walks, four strikeouts) and Moynihan (one inning, no runs, no hits, one walk, one strikeout) both saw time on the mound in relief.

St. Mary’s (3-0) plays on the road against St. John’s Prep Friday afternoon (3:30).

Bishop Fenwick 1, Arlington Catholic 0

Christian Loescher tossed a complete-game shutout for the Crusaders in the win, tossing seven innings and allowing just two hits with four walks and nine strikeouts. 

Chris Faraca (0-for-2) drove in the lone run of the game, while Dan Reddick (2-for-2), Scott Emerson (1-for-1) and Mike Faragi (1-for-2) added hits. 

Fenwick (2-2) plays on the road at Danvers Saturday afternoon (1).

Gloucester 5, Swampscott 3

Jonah Cadorette had two RBI in the loss for the Big Blue, while Jason Bouffard had one RBI on a sacrifice fly. Joseph Ford took the loss on the mound, pitching five innings and allowing four runs on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts. 

Swampscott (2-1) hosts Peabody Friday (7).

SOFTBALL

Peabody 26, Salem 0 (F/5)

Abby Bettencourt and Avery Grieco combined for a perfect game on the mound through five innings, with Abby Bettencourt throwing the first three innings and Grieco pitching the final two. 

Offensively, Emma Bloom went 2-for-4 with two home runs and five RBI. Grieco went 4-for-5 with three RBI, while Abby Bettencourt went 3-for-4 with a home run and six RBI. Gina Terrazzano went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI, Logan Lomasney went 1-for-4 with two RBI, Penny Spack went 3-for-3 with one RBI and Payton Petrillo went 1-for-1 with one RBI. Kiley Doolin, Elayna Capone and Sarah Broughton also added hits.

Peabody (3-0) hosts Beverly Friday (4).

Gloucester 12, Saugus 6

The Sachems got strong performances at the plate from Cat Schena (3-for-3, home run, two RBI), Lily Ventre (3-for-4, double, triple, three RBI) and Kyleigh Dalton (2-for-3, home run, RBI). Leah Ventre pitched six innings on the mound, while Fallon Millerick tossed one inning in relief.

Saugus (1-1) takes on Masconomet Friday (4).

Marblehead 11, Winthrop 2

Behind a 15-strikeout performance from Lauren Donovan, the Magicians cruised to their second victory of the season. 

Jolie Quintana led the way at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI. Maeve Sogoloff had a triple and two RBI, while Ila Bumagin went 3-for-4 and Ashleigh Maude went 2-for-4.

Marblehead (2-0) has a full week off before hosting Peabody Wednesday (4).

Beverly 12, Swampscott 2 (F/5)

Swampscott (0-3) travels to Salem Friday (4).

VOLLEYBALL

GBL Playoffs First Round

Classical 3, Somerville 0

The Rams moved on to the next round of the playoffs via set scores of 25-14, 25-19, 25-11. 

Chloe Clement had a huge night for the Rams, setting a school record with 22 kills in the win. Brooke Warren had 16 service points, while Samantha Thoeun had 15 service points, 14 assists, three aces, six kills and seven digs. Reese Brinkler had five kills and seven digs, while Izzy Faessler had seven assists and 10 digs. 

Classical (7-1) will now take on Medford in the GBL semifinal round Thursday (5).

Revere 3, Chelsea 0

Revere moves on to the GBL semifinal round against Malden Thursday (5:30).

BOYS LACROSSE

St. Mary’s 13, Malden Catholic 8

The Spartans got a four-goal performance from Zach Barden in the win, while Jackson Field and Brady Ayles each scored three goals. Harrison Kinne, Seamus Foley and Sam York each scored one goal.

St. Mary’s (3-0) travels to Austin Prep Saturday evening (5).

Peabody 16, Winthrop 6

Behind four goals and two assists from Jack Houlden, the Tanners rolled to a win Wednesday. Keenan Madden added three goals and Anthony Bettencourt had two goals and one assist, while Cam Collins and Luke Buckley each scored two goals. Drew Lucas, Brady Carpenter and Jonathan Padios each scored one goal. Goalie Derek Patturelli had eight saves in the win.

Peabody (2-0) has a quick turnaround with a road game against Peabody Thursday (4).

Arlington Catholic 9, Bishop Fenwick 8

Liam Hill had four goals in the loss, while Tyler Mullen scored two goals. Manny Alvarez-Segee and Brady McClung each scored one goal, while Aiden Anthony had three assists. George Kostolias had eight saves in net.

Fenwick (0-2) travels to Peabody Saturday night (7).

GIRLS LACROSSE

Peabody 15, Winthrop 0

Hailee Lomasney led the offensive attack for the Tanners with five goals and two assists, while Amber Kiricoples had four goals and two assists. McKayla Fisher added two goals and two assists, while Lauren Woods scored her first career varsity goal in the win.

Defensively, Emily McDonough, Jordyn Collins, Sophie Izzo and Elise Staunton all played well and goalkeeper Olivia Lavalle had five saves. 

Peabody (2-0) has a quick turnaround with a game against Swampscott Thursday (4).

Bishop Fenwick 10, Arlington Catholic 9

Karina Gyllenhaal once again had a huge game, notching four goals and one assist for the Crusaders. Lucy O’Flynn added two goals and three assists, while Ella Morgan scored two goals. Jenna Durkin had one goal and one assist, while Mia Tsarparlis scored one goal. Goalie Ava Molineaux had five saves.

Fenwick (3-0) travels to Matignon Monday (4).

GIRLS TENNIS 

St. Mary’s 3, Arlington Catholic 2

The Spartans took home their first victory of the season behind wins from Gigi Korisianos, Meghan Lovett, Kelly Lovett and Shannon Lovett.

St. Mary’s (1-1) is right back in action Thursday afternoon (3:30) with a home match against Archbishop Williams.

Lynnfield 5, Triton 0

The Pioneers got wins from Emma Gallucci (6-0. 6-2), Ava Buonfiglio (6-0 6-0) and Anna Radulski (6-1, 6-0) in singles play and the teams of Emily Goguen-Lauren Grava (6-3, 6-2) and Gabi Mellor-Genna Gioisa (6-0 6-2) in doubles play.

Lynnfield (2-0) plays on the road at Rockport Friday (3:30).

Marblehead 5, Peabody 0

The Magicians swept their matches, with Courtney Yoder winning first singles (6-0, 6-0), Maddie Conlon winning second singles (6-0, 6-0) and Charly Cooper winning third singles (6-2, 6-1). Marblehead also got wins from the doubles team of Leah Schauer and Aoife Bresnahan (6-0, 6-0) and the doubles team of Katie Pyne and Aviva Bornstein (6-1, 6-2).

Marblehead (3-1) hosts Saugus Monday (4:30).

Peabody (0-2) takes on Winthrop Friday (4).

WRESTLING

St. John’s Prep 57, Shawsheen 16

The Eagles got wins from Alex Schaeublin (106 pounds), Tyler Knox (120), Nick Curley (126), Elias Hajali (132), Adam Schaeublin (138), Rawson Iwanicki (152), Jordan Young (160), Garrett Dunn (182), Dylan Greenstein (195), Zach Richardson (220) and Charlie Smith (285).

St. John’s Prep (1-0) wrestles against St. John’s (Shrewsbury) Tuesday (6).
