School Sports Roundup: Swampscott boys lacrosse beats Danvers in overtime thriller

Vinny Palmer was the hero for the Swampscott boys lacrosse team Monday, winning a draw and scoring the game-winning goal to lift the Big Blue to a 10-9 overtime win over Danvers.

Palmer scored five total goals in the win, while Christian Pierro scored three goals with one assist. Jayson Codispoti scored one goal and dished one assist, while Thomas Poska had one goal. Jack Russo had four assists. 

Aidan Breault made seven saves in net.

Swampscott is at Saugus Tuesday (4).

BOYS LACROSSE

St. Mary’s 11, Arlington Catholic 10 (OT)

Jackson Field had the game winner for St. Mary’s and scored three total in the win. Zach Barden had four goals. Harrison Kinne had one goal and two assists. Sam York, Seamus Foley and Brady Ayles each scored one goal.

The Spartans are at Bishop Stang Wednesday (4).

St. John’s Prep 14, BC High 4

Jimmy Ayers led the way again for the Eagles with five goals and one assist. Charlie Wilmot (one assist) and Michael Kelly each scored two goals. Tommy Sarni had one goal and three assists. Pat Atkins, Charlie Danis, Graham Tyson and Luke Surette each scored one goal, while Tyee Ambrosh had one assist. Kaden Quirk had 11 saves.

The Eagles travel to Catholic Memorial Thursday (5:30).

GIRLS LACROSSE

Gloucester 13, Saugus 4

The Sachems continue to improve but still couldn’t get over the hump to grab their first win on the season. Georgia Fiore scored three goals, while Kali Penachio had one. Amanda DeFronzo also played well offensively.

Daniela Marquez, Jess Valley, Elise Rego and Juliana Scallisi all played well defensively.

Saugus hosts Masconomet Thursday (4).

SOFTBALL

St. Mary’s 5, Arlington Catholic 3

The Spartans (5-1) host Bridgewater-Raynham Tuesday (5). 

BOYS TENNIS

Bishop Fenwick 5, St. Mary’s 0

Fenwick hosts Archbishop Williams Friday (4:15).

St. Mary’s hosts Bishop Feehan Wednesday (3:30).

GIRLS TENNIS

Lynnfield 3, Hamilton-Wenham 2

The Pioneers squeaked out the win to remain undefeated on the year thanks to a win from Ava Buonfiglio in a three-hour marathon second singles match (7-5, 5-7, 6-3). Ana Radulski (6-0, 6-2) also won in singles, while Emily Goguen and Lauren Graba won in doubles (6-3, 1-6, 6-4).

Lynnfield (4-0) is at Newburyport Wednesday (3:30).

Bishop Fenwick 5, St. Joseph’s Prep 0

The Crusaders dominated with Nora Elenbaas (8-1), Madeline Leary (8-0) and Sam Summa (8-0) winning in singles. The doubles teams of Kristina Rusha and Julianna Camozzi (8-1) and Sabrina Botthof and Liz Champagne (8-3) also won.

Fenwick hosts Archbishop Williams Friday (3).

Masconomet 3, Swampscott 2

Swampscott fell just short despite a nice day for its doubles teams. Anna Mazarenko and Mariel Fulgham won first doubles (6-4, 3-6, 10-6), while Sarah Kabel and Mary Alice Brennan won second doubles (3-6, 6-3, 11-9).

The Big Blue visit Danvers Wednesday (4).

Marblehead 4, Saugus 1

The first doubles pair of Emily Clough and Lauren Podgur continued their unbeaten streak for Marblehead head with 6-0, 6-1 win. Cannan Whittier got the win in second singles (6-0, 6-1), while Ava Ullian won in third singles (6-0, 6-2). Libby Rosen made her varsity debut with Leah Saulnier and won 6-1, 6-0 in doubles.

Saugus’ Lanna Queiroz topped Jessie Munroe in first singles (6-0, 6-2).

Bishop Feehan 5, St. Mary’s 0

St. Mary’s is at Austin Prep Wednesday (3:30).
