It was Gavin George’s turn to come up big for the St. John’s Prep baseball team, as the senior notched a walk-off RBI fielder’s choice in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Eagles to a 5-4 win in extra innings Thursday afternoon at Pete Frates Field.

It all started when DJ Pacheco reached on a dropped third strike in the eighth. After Pacheco stole second, Eric Wing moved him over to third with a sacrifice bunt. That set the stage for George, who hit a ground ball to shortstop that was just slow enough to allow Pacheco to beat the throw home, giving the Eagles the victory.

Nick Solitro had a solid day for the Prep, going 1-for-3 with two RBI. Pacheco added one RBI in the win, while Pat D’Amico went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple and two runs scored.

Peter Martin earned the win on the mound in relief, tossing 5 2/3 innings and allowing three runs on six hits with seven strikeouts. Joseph Gizmunt and Sam Beliveau also saw time on the mound in the win.
