The Lynn English baseball team opened up its 2021 season with a bang Monday, as Ray Contreras — in his first varsity game ever — tossed a no-hitter for the Bulldogs in a 17-0 win over Greater Boston League foe Chelsea that was called after three innings.
Ray Contreras tossed all three innings, walking just two batters and striking out eight.
“I’m so happy for him,” said English coach Esteban Paula, who is in his first year at the helm. “For him to come out and perform like that in his first varsity game, that will give him a ton of confidence going forward.”
Clodys Prandys had a massive game offensively for English, going 3-for-3 with a home run, a triple, two RBI and four runs scored. Yordy Contreras (2-for-3, double) and Luis Pina (1-for-3) each had three RBI to lead the way, while Mateo Rodriguez (0-for-0, two walks) and Enmanual Javier (1-for-2) each had two RBI and Eldrian Bonilla (0-for-1) had one RBI.
“It was really good to see the guys come right out and be so comfortable at the plate, especially after missing an entire season,” said Paula. “The key for us is to just keep seeing pitches, making adjustments and taking advantage of our chances.”
English (1-0) hosts Malden in its home opener Wednesday (4) at Fraser Field.
“I think that game is really the one we’ve been waiting for,” said Paula. “The guys are all excited to get back out on their home field and play on a beautiful day, and it’ll be also fun to go up against a great team in Malden.”
