Gyms drop mask mandate

Now that things are easing up in the strict COVID-19 protocol department, the masks are coming off in two of the area’s most prominent physical fitness facilities — at least partially.

In the YMCA of Metro North, which encompasses Lynn, Saugus, Peabody and Melrose, mask mandates will be lifted as of Saturday for all those who have been vaccinated. Following suit is the Planet Fitness chain, which has gyms in Lynn, Revere and Salem.

“I think we have followed the science the entire time (of the pandemic),” said Andrea Baez, senior executive director at the Lynn Demakes Family YMCA, which opened last Monday. “We have followed CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) regulations, and local and state government regulations.”

It was “welcome news for our staff and members,” according to a statement released Monday by the YMCA of Metro North.

Baez said the organization is trying to be as cautious as it can under the circumstances. However, proof of vaccination will not be required.

The facility in Lynn is “wide open and spacious,” Baez said, “but we will still have partitions (for social distancing) if people want them.”

Similar to the YMCA, Planet Fitness has announced that vaccinated customers in its Massachusetts locations no longer have to wear masks as of Saturday, in accordance with state protocols. The chain, which has its headquarters in Hampton, N.H. — but has gyms in Lynn, Revere and Salem — rolled out a list of rules and regulations on how to proceed. Normally the gyms are open 24/7. But in at least one gym (Salem), the doors will close for one hour between 1 and 2 a.m. for deep cleaning.

“As an industry leader, the health and safety of Planet Fitness’ members and team members is a top priority,” according to a statement put out by its headquarters. “In preparation for full reopening of clubs … Planet Fitness will maintain its existing cleanliness policies and procedures to protect the health and well-being of members, team members and the local community.”

To further ensure safety, Planet Fitness managers will see to it that all team members have completed extensive training related to the gym’s enhanced cleanliness and sanitation policies and procedures, and they’ll receive daily temperature checks upon arrival to work.

Team members will also conduct 20-minute “walk arounds” to continually clean and sanitize “high-touch” areas. In addition, increased sanitization stations will be available throughout the gym floor and members will continue to be asked to wipe down equipment before and after use.

Baez said because kids haven’t been able to receive shots yet, masks will stay on for the YMCA children’s programs.

“I feel bad for the kids,” she said. “They, and the staff of adults working with them, have to stay masked. And it’s hot, and uncomfortable. Plus, hearing people talk and reading facial expressions is important, especially with kids. But I get it.”

She said the Y’s cleaning protocols will remain in place.

“I think one thing we took out of COVID is that there are still ways to stay fit and take precautions,” she said.

Besides, Baez said, masks aren’t always a hindrance.

“As someone who works out a lot, it’s hot and sweaty, and you have a tough time breathing,” she said. “But I didn’t get a cold this winter. So I may put a mask on during flu season.”
