Letter: We don’t need vote-by-mail

our-opinion

May 31, 2021 by our-opinion

To the editor:

Massachusetts’ “vote-by-mail” program is set to expire by the end of June. At that point, the Legislature will need to decide if they want to continue this COVID-19-related election experiment or let it expire. After nearly 500 days, Governor Baker is finally letting almost all of his COVID-19 related orders expire.

I strongly believe that “vote-by-mail” should join those highly-questionable mandates as they are tossed onto the junk pile of history.

Even without the pandemic-related vote-by-mail program, any voter who cannot vote in person on Election Day may ask for an absentee ballot and still vote. Moreover, Massachusetts continues to have several weeks of early voting.

There is really no sound reason to continue mailing millions of unsecured ballots through the post office. It’s time to get back to normal.

I strongly urge all taxpayers, voters and residents of the Commonwealth to call the Office of Gov. Charlie Baker at 617-725-4005 and emphatically urge him to oppose any further extension of the unnecessary vote-by-mail program.
