SALEM — Mayor Kimberley Driscoll announced opening schedules for the city’s community buildings following Governor Charlie Baker’s announcement earlier this month that the state will fully reopen May 29.
According to information from the mayor’s office, over the next several weeks the Mayor Jean Levesque Community Life Center will gradually begin transitioning programs to its indoor spaces.
Starting June 1, public areas in the building, including the lounge, pool room, fitness room and library will reopen. Congregate meals will not resume until later in June.
Offices are now open for social work and veterans’ services appointments, and for routine business such as parking stickers and passes.
When registering for a program, residents will be notified as to whether the program will be held indoors or outdoors.
Also on June 1, the Salem Public Library will reopen to the public with operating hours of 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The library will remain closed on Sundays.
“This is an exciting moment in our city made possible because of the many sacrifices that community members of all ages have made over the last 14 months,” Driscoll said.
While acknowledging the town’s excitement over what seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel for the COVID-19 pandemic, Driscoll still cautioned residents to remain on their guard when it comes to preventing the spread of the virus.
“We are enthusiastic about the full reopening of our public and private spaces, but with gaps in our vaccination rates we’re not yet declaring complete victory because cases and hospitalizations can rise again if we’re not diligent,” Driscoll said. “I urge everyone to be smart, to continue wearing masks when inside if you’re not vaccinated, and most importantly, to join the more than 25,000 Salem residents who have already got their vaccine.”
