To the editor:
It’s evident that we are witnessing the effects of climate change in our daily lives. Melting glaciers, rising sea levels and the effects of the intensifying heatwaves are no stranger to us here in Massachusetts.
This is why it’s crucial for Massachusetts to transition to 100 percent renewable energy to help slow the effects of climate change. As a young person growing up with the ever-looming effects of climate change on the horizon, doing something now to ensure that my future — along with countless others — can be preserved through the use of renewable energy is just one step to combat the climate-change crisis.
As of right now, 80 percent of the energy used in the United States relies on fossil fuels. However, Lynn has been designated as a “green community” to help with this reliance on fossil fuels.
To be a green community means that as a city, we are committing to clean energy goals to reduce energy consumption and lower emissions. With this in mind, the advocacy for 100 percent clean energy falls right in line with the goals we are setting out for.
As a community, showing our elected officials that we are in collective support for the 100 Percent Clean Act, filed by state Reps. Marjorie Decker and Sean Garballey and state Sen. Joseph Boncore, will transition our state to 100 percent clean electricity, heating and transportation.
That is an amazing step toward achieving a more safe and hopeful future where future generations won’t have to worry about the effects of climate change.
