SAUGUS — A JRM garbage truck crashed into a utility pole on Clifton Avenue Tuesday evening, taking down wires and shutting down traffic in the area, the fire department said.
The fire department responded to the crash at approximately 4:30 p.m. and stayed on scene for about three hours, while crews notified National Grid of the accident, established a safe area and worked with police to keep vehicle and pedestrian traffic away from the intersection of Clifton Avenue and Endicott Street, Fire Lt. Steve Seracuse said.
There were no injuries, but a nearby transformer exploded — an issue that was resolved quickly, Seracuse said.
Seracuse said National Grid arrived on the scene about 35 minutes after the company was called and determined that the downed poles and wires didn’t pose any hazard to the public.
National Grid remained on scene for a few hours as the company waited for trucks to assist with lifting the pole. A police detail kept the area blocked off as National Grid worked to clean up the remaining wires, Seracuse said.
A few nearby homes were impacted, but National Grid has since resolved the issue.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
