The Catholic Central League released its brackets for the spring CCL Cup tournaments, and the St. Mary’s softball team earned the area’s highest seed after slotting into the No. 2 spot behind top-seeded BIshop Feehan. The CCL Cup tournaments will be played in baseball, softball, boys lacrosse, girls lacrosse, boys tennis and girls tennis and will take place from June 10-15 in the leadup to the state tournament.
The Spartans, who are currently 13-2 on the season, have gotten great performances all year from Alyssa Grossi, Marina DiBiasio, Lily Newhall and a host of others. After enjoying a first-round bye, St. Mary’s will host No. 7 Bishop Stang in the quarterfinal round on June 11 (4) at Gordon College.
The Bishop Fenwick softball team earned the No. 8 seed in the bracket, and the Crusaders will face No. 9 St. Joseph’s Prep in the first round on June 11 (TBD) for the right to take on No. 1 Feehan in the quarterfinal round.
Over in the baseball bracket, St. Mary’s earned the No. 3 seed and will get fast-tracked to the quarterfinal round against No. 6 Arlington Catholic on June 11 (4) at Gordon College. Bishop Fenwick, which earned the No. 5 seed and also got a first-round bye, will face No. 4 Bishop Feehan in the quarterfinal round on June 11 (TBD) at Bishop Fenwick High School.
St. Mary’s and Bishop Fenwick are right next to each other in the boys lacrosse bracket, with the Spartans sitting at No. 4 and the Crusaders sitting at No. 5. The seedings earn both teams a bye in the first round, and the longtime rivals will face off against each other in the quarterfinal round on June 11 (7) under the lights at Manning Field.
In girls lacrosse, Bishop Fenwick comes in at the No. 3 seed and St. Mary’s sits at No. 8. The Spartans will have to play in the first round against No. 9 Bishop Stang on June 10 (3) at Gordon College — with the winner taking on No. 1 Bishop Feehan the next day. Fenwick will enjoy a first-round bye before going up against No. 6 St. Joseph’s Prep in the quarterfinal round on June 11 (TBD) at Bishop Fenwick High School.
The boys and girls tennis brackets only have one local team on each, and it’s the Bishop Fenwick in both cases. With only four teams in each bracket, the Crusaders will only need to win one match to advance to the championship. The Fenwick boys and girls will both face Austin Prep on June 11, with the girls starting at 3:30 and the boys starting at a time to be determined.
