REVERE — The Lynn English baseball team went into the fifth inning with a 6-3 lead, but the Bulldogs let up five runs in the bottom of the frame and never recovered in an 8-6 loss to Greater Boston League foe Revere Friday afternoon at Revere High School.

Angel Gonzalez led the offensive attack for English in the loss, going 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Yordy Contreras (2-for-3), Luis Pina (1-for-3) and Clodys Prandys (0-for-4) each had one RBI in the loss.

Ray Contreras took the loss on the mound, pitching 4 2/3 innings and allowing eight runs on five hits with six walks and four strikeouts. Jeremies Brito pitched the final 1 1/3 innings, giving up only one hit.

Revere leadoff man Mike Popp had a huge day at the plate in the win, going 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI. Casey Cummings (2-for-2) and Calvin Boudreau (1-for-4) each had one RBI and one run scored.

Casey Cummings also earned the victory on the mound, going 5 2/3 innings and allowing four runs on five hits with nine strikeouts. Kyle Cummings, Casey’s brother, earned the save after pitching the final 2/3 of an inning.

The Bulldogs got off to a fast start in this one, jumping ahead 2-0 thanks to a two-run home run from Gonzalez.

But Revere answered right back. A walk, a single and a stolen base in the bottom of the first put runners on second and third for Casey Cummings, who knocked an RBI single to make it a 2-1 game. Next up was EJ Leone, who grounded into a fielder’s choice that allowed Boudreau to come home and score on a throwing error and tie the score at 2-2.

English was able to put up one run in each of the next four innings to slowly stretch out its lead, starting with an RBI double from Contreras in the top of the second. Pina added an RBI double of his own in the top of the third to make it 4-2, then Gonzalez smacked an RBI single in the top of the fourth to make it 5-2.

After Revere got one run back on a Boudreau sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth, the Bulldogs rounded out their scoring in the top of the fifth on an RBI groundout from Prandys to put the score at 6-3 English.

Then came the killer inning — the bottom of the fifth.

A pair of walks put two Revere runners on base, then an English error brought home the first run to make it 6-4. After one more walk loaded the bases, Popp stepped into the box and smashed a clutch grand slam to catapult Revere into the lead.

The Bulldogs just couldn’t get the bats going after that, going down 1-2-3 in each of their final two at-bats to take the loss.

English (3-2) plays on the road at Somerville Tuesday (4).

Revere (3-1) takes on Medford Monday afternoon (4).
