BRAINTREE — Behind a two-run rally in the top of the fifth inning, the St. Mary’s baseball team kept its winning streak alive with a 3-1 victory over Catholic Central League foe Archbishop Williams on the road Friday afternoon. The Spartans have now notched three straight wins, all of them coming against CCL opponents.
Deniel Ortiz went 1-for-2 with one RBI in the win, while Colby Magliozzi went 1-for-4 with one RBI. Terence Moynihan notched the only other hit for the Spartans, notching a double in the fifth inning.
On the mound, Tommy Falasca picked up his first varsity win after pitching five innings and allowing one run on four hits with one strikeout. Andrew Luciano went the final two innings for the Spartans, giving up just one hit and sealing the win.
After holding St. Mary’s scoreless in the top of the first, Williams got on the board first thanks to a pair of doubles. Drew Marini led off the inning with a two-bagger, then Matt Kowalski followed that up with an RBI double to make it 1-0 Bishops.
The score remained there until the top of the third inning, when the Spartans were finally able to get something going. A hit batter, an error and a walk loaded up the bases with two outs, and Aiven Cabral made a heads-up baserunning play to score on a passed ball and tie it up at 1-1.
The score remained there until the top of the fifth. Cabral once again provided the spark, drawing a two-out walk before stealing second and then advancing to third on an error. That was all Magliozzi needed, as the senior stepped in and laced an RBI single to give St. Mary’s a 2-1 lead. Next up was Ortiz, who lined an RBI single up the middle to round out the scoring and give the Spartans a two-run lead.
Luciano took over from there, retiring the side in order in the bottom of the fifth before giving up a leadoff single in the sixth. That single didn’t amount to anything though, as Luciano induced a double play on the next pitch and then another groundout to get out of the inning. He then retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh, bringing home the win for the Spartans.
St. Mary’s (9-5) hosts Arlington Catholic Saturday morning (11) in what will be its fourth game in the past six days.
