SWAMPSCOTT — The School Committee has approved a new five-year contract with the Nahant School Committee to continue having Nahant’s middle- and high-school students attend Swampscott Public Schools.
The new contract, which committee members unanimously approved at Wednesday night’s meeting, raises the tuition amount that Nahant pays the district by 2.5 percent each year, resulting in a starting tuition cost of $1.61 million for fiscal year 2023 spread over three payments during the year, and a final cost of $1.77 million for FY27.
“This represents the second phase of a very updated agreement that we started with about five years ago, when there was really quite a discrepancy between what the Nahant students were paying and what it actually cost the district,” said committee Chair Amy O’Connor. “We feel like it was a bargaining in good faith that reflected the good relationship that we have, but also reflects what an education in Swampscott schools is valued at.”
O’Connor noted that the number of Nahant students in neighboring Swampscott is projected to decrease over the course of the contract, and said that they expect to have around 100 students from the smaller town between grades seven and 12 next year.
The new contract goes into effect on July 1, 2022.
“We have a great partnership with Nahant in lots of ways. In professional development, in curriculum coordination,” said Superintendent of Schools Pamela Angelakis. “These Nahant students are our students.”
