School Sports Roundup: St. Mary’s baseball advances to CCL Cup semifinal

The St. Mary’s baseball team moved on in the CCL Cup Friday night, beating Arlington Catholic 8-0 thanks to a great pitching performance by Tommy Falasca.

Falasca pitched six innings of the shutout, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out seven. John Nowicki closed things down in the seventh and had one strikeout.

Lucas Fritz (1-for-3, walk, two RBI, two runs scored) powered the offense with a two-run home run. Zach Fisher, Terence Moynihan, Andrew Luciano and Falasca each had one RBI. Aiven Cabral had two hits and scored one run.

St. Mary’s will face Bishop Stang in the CCL Cup semifinals Sunday (2).

BASEBALL

English 12, Somerville 4

Yordy Contreras powered the Bulldogs, going 3-for-3 at the plate with five RBI and three runs scored. Brendan Falasca had three RBI. Mateo Rodriguez scored three runs while Jeremies Brito scored twice. Chris Figuereo Perez, Clodys Prandys and Angel Gonzalez each had one RBI.

Joshua Jimenez pitched six innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and four walks

Everett at Classical (4)

Swampscott 6, Winthrop 5

Alex Greenfield drove in the eventual game-winning run on fielder’s choice that brought home John Caponigro to lift Swampscott to the win in the seventh.

Caponigro, Connor Correnti and Jonah Cadorette all had two hits. Matt Schroeder got the win on the mound after coming in for starter Matt McIntire. Aidan Graciale earned the save.

Swampscott (7-7, 6-6 in NEC) hosts Beverly Monday (4).

SOFTBALL

CCL Cup Quarterfinal 

St. Mary’s 10, Bishop Stang 3

The Spartans got another dominant pitching performance from Lily Newhall, who struck out 12 batters in a complete-game effort. Newhall also got the job done at the plate, hitting a home run and a triple with three RBI. Julia Nickolau had a triple and three RBI, while Alyssa Grossi had a home run and one RBI in the win.

St. Mary’s (17-2) hosts Cardinal Spellman in the CCL Cup semifinal Sunday (4) at Breed.

Saugus 12, Swampscott 0

Leah Ventre notched her second no-hitter of the season in the win with eight strikeouts and two walks.

Ryann Maloney and Lily Ventre each had two RBI. Cat Schena (2-for-3) had one RBI. Fallon Millerick went 2-for-4 at the plate, while her sister Devany went 1-for-2. Leah Ventre hit 2-for-3.

Saugus (9-3) wraps up the season with Senior Day at home Sunday (4) against Danvers.

Winthrop 3, Masconomet 2

The Vikings squeezed out a win thanks to Izzy Mahoney (1-for-3, triple), who scored the winning run in the fifth. Sophie Vitale earned the win, allowing eight hits and two earned runs with nine strikeouts.

Winthrop (8-5) wraps up the regular season Sunday (10) at home against Danvers.

BOYS LACROSSE

Masconomet 12, Swampscott 3

The Big Blue ran into a tough Masco team but still got two goals from Vinny Palmer. Zach Pierce added one goal while Christian Urbano had two assists. Aidan Breault had 13 saves.

Swampscott (9-4) is at Marblehead Tuesday (4).

GIRLS LACROSSE

Saugus 8, Northeast Metro 5

Kali Penachio led the way for the Sachems with four goals while Haley McLaughlin and Sara Rovcanin each had two goals.

Saugus (4-10) concludes the season Monday (4) at home against Beverly.

BOYS TENNIS

Classical 3, English 2

English got wins in third singles from Jacob Johansson (6-2, 6-2) and in first doubles from Cole Story and Santiago Grijalva (6-2, 7-5).

GIRLS TENNIS

Classical 5, English 0

The Rams got wins in singles from Kenzie McLaren (6-1, 6-1), Alyssa Raithel (6-0, 6-1) and Sabrina Motassim (8-0). In doubles, Rania Merbah and Sam Thoeun (6-2, 6-0) and Khunnary Thach and Linda Jallow (8-1) earned wins.

Classical is at home against Everett Monday. 

BOYS TRACK

Lynn Tech over KIPP

The Tigers concluded the season late Thursday with wins from Ruebins Cecilien (400m Hurdles), Brian Zarate (two-mile), Jose Hercules (one-mile and 800m), Jordan Lee (400m), Remy Chiep (javelin) and Kyle Lindquist (discus). The relay team of Brian Zarate, Mario Rivera, Jeremiah Arzola and Enmanuel Ramirez also won the 4×400.

Tech finishes the year at 4-1.

GIRLS TRACK

Classical sweeps English and Somerville

The Rams improved to 4-1 thanks to great performances from Maruim Bamaca, Kenya Majia and Mia Kebreu. 

Lynn Tech over KIPP

Tech wrapped up the season Thursday with wins from Angelina Castillo (two-mile and 800m), Meralis Ventura (javelin and shot put), Nyari Lane (400m hurdles), Skyla McGough (100m hurdles), Dianne Pheun (one-mile), Ava Bishop (400m), Miyoka Johnson (200m) and Jireilis De Jesus (high jump). The Tigers also took both relays with Nyari Lane, Skyla Mcgough, Miyoka Johnson and Amaya Williams winning the 4×100 and Ava Bishop, Leena Pheun and Melaine Ortaga winning the 4×400.

Tech ends the year at 2-3.
